Professional grade X Series 12-35mm, F2.8 zoom lens

From the Manufacturer

Panasonic H-HS12035 LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm/F2.8 ASPH X Series Lens

Photography Pros Appreciate X Vario Technology

The Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO camera lens represents the next natural step in design and build for digital interchangeable zoom lenses. A first for the LUMIX G Series, the G VARIO constant with F2.8 zoom is suitable for professionals and enthusiasts alike. You can focus on a wide range of scenes from dynamic landscapes to studio lit portraits. Panasonic’s long time collaboration with LEICA inspired an exclusive X Series design. With the X Series Lenses, LUMIX blends its own unique mix of broadcast video and advanced mirrorless camera technologies into a premium lens line. Featuring professional grade aperture in a compact body, use it in your professional studio photography.

Professional Grade Glass for Great Images in Various Shooting Conditions
XRed

The LUMIX G X VARIO interchangeable lens system is comprised of 14 elements in 9 groups. The UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) glass minimizes chromatic aberration while the UHR (Ultra High Refractive) lens realizes high descriptive performance from corner to corner. Featuring high contrast and resolution within the entire zoom range - the X VARIO lens highlights intricate details that command your attention lending a true-to-life portrait perspective in almost any scene. Advanced Focusing happens because seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractive smooth defocus effect for those out-of-focus areas. Mount it on any LUMIX G body and delight in high-speed Contrast Auto Focus.

Power O.I.S. Minimizes Blur and Enhances Images
Power O.I.S.

By integrating POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), movement, whether slow or fast, is accounted for making your job easier to shoot in those low-lit situations at night or even indoors at a get-together. By adopting an inner focus system, driven by a stepping-in-motion motor, the lens’ superior design provides smooth and near-silent focusing action that is ideal for both picture and video recording.

Constructed to be Light and Durable for your Photo Expeditions
Splash/Dust Proof

This interchangeable lens boasts about how light and compact it really is. As you travel, this zoom lens results in extreme mobility for your busy, on-the-go tour days and travel expeditions. It also protects against nature’s elements, countering moisture and dust with its rubber ring around the lens mount. It is ideal for outdoor photography enthusiasts. And a highly reliable metal mount assures long periods of use. Have fun and travel light.

Nano Surface Coating Reduces Reflection
Nano Surface Coating Premium Lens

With Panasonic’s unique Nano Surface Coating technology, reflections in the entire visual range (380nm-780nm) are minimized giving you a dramatic reduction in glares, flares and ghosting. The result? Unbelievably clear, professional pictures whose superior clarity tells more than a thousand words.

As with all things in photography, the 12-35x is a compromise. A good compromise, but a compromise all the same.

As with all my reviews, I will preface that I am a part time pro photographer. My to kits consists of a 5D Mark II with a stable of L lenses and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 along with the Leica 25 1.4 and the Oly 45 1.8 and now the 12-35 2.8 X.

Pros

-great autofocus speed and accuracy on OM-D, very similar to the Leica 25 1.4

-excellent color and contrast, although not quite as good as the Leica 25 1.4

-useful zoom range, but would prefer slightly longer tele end aka 24-105 FF equivalent

-usefully fast constant aperture

-sharp wide open results, especially at the tele end, almost as good as primes mentioned above

-reasonable close focus distance

-weather-sealed construction to make the most of OM-D and a perfect travell / hiking lens

-Canon L series build quality (really feels like a mini 24-70 L zoom!)

Cons

-2.8 max aperture good for shutter speed / low light / low ISO, but not enough to create really shallow DOF on 4/3rd sensor (really need 1.8 or 1.4 depending on focal length)

-Chromatic Ab., color fringing in highlights, and slightly soft corners wide open ( none of these are unusual though, even on the Canon version and CA and fringing easily corrected in post)

-Cost, although I am sure Panny will sell enough of these to justify the price. At $999 this lens would be a steal, seriously.

Overall impressions

This is a critical lens for the M43 system and really helps make the whole format a viable alternative to pro DSLRs.

I've been waiting for this lens ever since I sold my Canon 17-55 f/2.8 lens a year ago. My wait started before any rumors this lens existed. I always dream for a fast constant aperture lens. It's no longer a dream. This lens is here and better than what I expected.

The build quality is great.

Size is about 3 times the Panasonic 20mm lens. It extends out more during zoom. This is one of the larger lens in the Micro Four Thirds lineup. I uploaded some pictures of the size comparison under 'customer images' above.

It weighs 305g so it's more comfortable on a camera with hand grip - I'm using it on a GH2. It's also weather sealed so it should be difficult for dust and water to get in. Zoom and MF rings are well damped. There's image stabilization.

The lens comes with a lens pouch and petal lens hood.

It's a marvel to get a 24-70mm field of view with a f/2.8 into this size. It's way lighter than the 17-55mm lens from Canon and Nikon that weigh 645g and 755g respectively. Weight is the reason why I sold my Canon lens. I still love Canon's image quality, but I prefer a lighter photography setup.

Image quality is great. Sharpness is reasonably good, best at f/4. There's little discernible fringing at the wide end.

At this very moment, both the Panasonic 12-35 and the Olympus 12-40 sit on my desk. Originally, I made the decision to buy the 12-35 due to the perceived size advantage that it has over the Olympus but I was curious about whether I made the right decision. Well, I'm still not sure.

The comparative image quality has been discussed many times before and all that I can add to that discussion is that they are both very good and that you won't be disappointed with either. As an EM-5 user, I haven't had CA issues with the Panasonic, and any difference in sharpness (if it exists) is negligible. Optically, the lenses are both excellent and this isn't really a factor as I decide which one to keep.

What I can say, with certainty, is that the 12-35 is a fantastic lens with several advantages over it's cousin:

1) Build quality-- Initial reports of the Olympus being the best built M43 lens were, in my opinion, completely inaccurate. The lens mount issue aside, the Olympus falls short of the Panasonic on several points. A) The zoom ring dampening. The Olympus is uneven with resistance being more pronounced at the wide and long ends of the range. It isn't much, but it is there. The Panasonic is smoother and even throughout the entire range. Really, I haven't used one smoother. 2) Lens wobble. With the lens zoomed out to it's maximum length, the Olympus lens has a small amount of play; you can move the lens up and down and side to side. Again, it isn't significant, but it is there is reason to question the manufacturing/design of the Olympus. And no, it isn't simply my copy. The issue has been discussed, and it is accepted as being normal. The Panasonic, at maximum zoom, doesn't move at all.
