The 950W is as quiet as the 750W was, and has the extra headroom to hopefully avoid overloading it again. For the record, this PC has an i7-860 overclocked to 3.4Ghz, 8GB of DDR3, two Nvidia videocards (GTX-275 + 8800GTS G92 for PhysX processing) driving 3 large LCD monitors, 1 SSD + 3 mechanical HDDs, 5x 120mm case fans, and about a million various things hanging off the USB ports.
What I love about PCP&C is that, unlike many PSU manufacturers, they actually *understate* their PSU capacity. This 950W Silencer MkII is actually rated at 1000W continuous and 1080W peak.Read more ›
This power supply is a terrific choice if you are running a high end PC with multiple video cards, an overclocked CPU, water cooling, and numerous hard drives. Whatever power connector you need more of, the Mk II has plenty. No more funky power splitters! Further, the connectors are flexible -- its PCIE 12V accessory connectors are designed to support either 6-pin or 8-pin sockets as needed.
The Mk II has a number of nice touches. For example, the fan will keep running for a few minutes after you shut down your PC to pump leftover warm air out of the PC's case. It has a true hard power switch so you can cut the line current to work in the case without unplugging the power cord and losing ground every time.
The best thing I can say about the Mk II is that there isn't much to say about it. You install the power supply, hook it up, and you're golden -- it'll serve you through years of system upgrades. As long as you prefer a power supply with permanent wires, as I do, instead of the modular connectors some supplies use, you can't go wrong with the Silencer Mk II.
My understanding is that OCZ has bought out PC Power and Cooling, so I suspect that these power supplies are a "close-out" deal at $119 with a coupon and rebate to boot. It remains to be seen whether or not the newer ones will have the same quality, but the ones I got are the good, old ones.
I took off one star because these are somewhat old design, lacking the modular feature of newer power supplies. For example, this power supply has four cables for up to four video cards. I don't need three of them (nobody with only one monitor really needs Crossfire or SLI), so I have three huge cables taking up space in my case. But it's well worth the bother to get such a high quality power supply at this price. If you think you'll need a quality 950 watt power supply, jump at this deal while you can.
