The computer monitor cord was missing one screw entirely, and that should have told me what I was in for. Luckily, I'm connecting it to a laptop, and do not need screws on that connection. It comes set up for PAL on the dip switches, even though the directions on the bottom say it is NTSC. No biggie, a flip of two switches fixed that problem. It says it will do the following: 640 x 480 (up to 85 Hz), 800 x 600 (up to 75 Hz) and 1024 x 768 (up to 75 Hz), 1280 x1024@60HZ I'm using win7, 64 bits. I couldn't get it to even show 640x480, and the only two stable resolutions are 800x600 and 1024x768. The computer complains occasionally at 1024x768, wanting to switch down to 800x600, but that chops off the edges of the screen. It will do much higher resolutions than 1280x1024, but it "drops" them and you get "no signal" from your TV. While it is working the higher resolutions look much clearer, but they will not last, not even the claimed one of 1280x1024. The "adjustment buttons" do very little to affect the picture quality, and if you adjust the video in/out or up/down too much, the computer loses connection with the converter. The "zoom" button makes it 5% bigger or smaller, why even bother? You can make it too bright to see, but you can never get a "clear" picture, no matter how much you adjust brightness/contrast. I didn't try hue or saturation; I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get it back to viewable if I did. It WILL NOT output SVHS no matter what you do; my TV just kept repeating "no signal" with any SVHS cord I tried. I even tried a premium cord; still "no signal" This is a major disappointment as I run component cables from my DVD player, and the only thing that will work with this is the RCA cable. The supplied cables were a joke, I've seen thicker headphone wires. The picture was terrible, and the sound hummed until I replaced them with medium quality RCA cables. The picture is bearable then, and no more hum. The audio cord supplied was "yellow/white", not even "red/white"; I don't think it was meant to be used for audio at all. It looks like an old-fashioned mono/video cord that has had a 1/8" stereo plug put on the end of it. In the end, I gave it one star because we did manage to stream some movies from our computers to the laptop, and we could read the subtitles. BAD DESIGN - DO NOT BUY until you read this review

This is a FUNDAMENTALLY FLAWED DESIGN.

If you live in the US, DO NOT BUY THIS. If you live in a PAL country, it *might* work for you.

I don't know what Einstein designed this device, but there are 2 TV signal standards: NTSC (N. America) and PAL (Europe, etc.). If you plug this device into a N. American NTSC system (ie an old tube TV with an RCA input), your video will roll rapidly, in B&W.

Ahhh, but the manufacturer claims it supports both NTSC and PAL....except you have to switch it from the default PAL to NTSC - USING A MENU YOU *CANNOT READ* BECAUSE IT IS IN PAL! Brilliant!!!! Who's the rocket scientist that came up with that idea? Really? Please do society a favor and remove them from the gene pool now, before somebody dies. Thank you.

Save your money, and buy one that comes with DIP switches to set the video type - they ALWAYS WORK, even with no TV and the power off :-)

UPDATE: the seller was very helpful and sent one pre-configured correctly, plus a pre-paid return. But you need to be sure you either get the right product version, the right seller, OR I saw somewhere that some flat panel tvs are more forgiving, and can actually display a PAL signal. So if you (or a friend) have one, try plugging it in there to change the display type. After changing it, the setting stays between power cycles.

This converter does work, you just have to get to the settings to correct them.

I was hesitant to purchase this item, but the price was low enough to take the gamble. I like to try to extend the life and functions of my older technology, for example I've jailbroken iPhones and rooted Android devices for them to do things that they aren't supposed to do (tethering, video recording on the original iPhone after Steve Jobs once said that wasn’t physically possible, etc.). I've always wanted the ability to output the desktop image of my older laptops to my TV. At work we use similarly ancient Dell laptops and projectors in the meeting rooms so I had a rough idea of how to accomplish the same thing at home using this VGA converter box. After reading the other comments and the Q&A section, I knew I had to make the switch from PAL to North American settings. A slight moment of confusion hit when there weren't any switches on my unit to do that. I read some more of the Q&A and found a review where she said that the composite cable worked better for her than the RCA cable. I tried that and the image on the screen of my TV stopped rolling long enough that I was able to get in the menu settings and find that the PAL settings are there, not physical switches anymore. Instantly after I made that selection, the screen sharpened up and things started looking like they should. This convertor actually works very well. Make sure you go into your computer’s properties and select to “extend the screen to a second monitor”, you find this menu buy right clicking on the desktop and it’s the last tab under Properties (for at least XP, Vista, and Win7). Small text is difficult to read, but that may be my old TV’s low resolution, it is not HD. Movies are very watchable, Word documents are readable if you turn the zoom up a little. Pictures of people are recognizable after you set the sharpness and color settings. That other reviewer was right when she said be patient and try different things to get this to work, the instructions that came with it are not really clear, but have a few helpful hints, like holding the menu button for 3 seconds to reset all of the settings. I was pleased to figure out that the settings don't revert back when the converter is unplugged, that's nice that I don't have to play around with it each time I use it. I went out this morning and picked up a separate cable that has a 3.5mm audio jack at one end and splits it into the red and white RCA tips at the other end for sound. This convertor does nothing for sound, just so you know.

Great for the Price

I ordered mine a few days ago and received it in a timely matter. As for the product itself, mine had the PAL NTSC switch removed and I was unable to switch from PAL to NTSC, or so I thought. With the connection to my old TV it was a blurry black and white vertically rolling mess. I read on another review that hooking up my computer to a flat panel screen should allow me to clearly read the menu of the adapter and be able to switch it to a NTSC setting. After I did this the display worked well and was in full color. Be warned this is not a high definition device and regular internet browsing will be very difficult if your vision is not perfect. But, you should have no problems navigating to Netflix or other movie playing sights and then the quality is about what you would expect out of an older television. Acceptable but definitely not HD. Overall great product for the price, I hope it lasts.
