Buyer beware! I purchased this and my computer kept giving me error messages from the install...well after numerous phone calls and chat sessions of false promises from their IT I had to give up. They would say Employee X will be reviewing your logs in one hour and will e-mail you by the end of the day.....only to follow with no contact. Or "an engineer will be calling you, when is a good time?" but never respond! Each time I contacted them I had to wait on hold for at least 30 minutes, and then twice they disconnected the call, and didn't call me back! Do NOT buy this software!

I've used Reg Mechanic for some years and it works ok.
I use it only for the registry scan and nothing else.
It isn't aggressive, finds registry debris, and has not resulted in use of a registry backup.

Installed and ran this version on two PC's, one with XP and other W7.
Registry scan removed nearly 1000 fragments each computer.
Updated my version to the version here yesterday.
Registry scan removed 2500 fragments W7.

Registry cleaning isn't a magic solution to computer performance but does help
especially for cleaning up fragments after a computer has been compromised by
Do use C: rt click for Properties/Tools/Error Checking/Auto Fix File System Errors/Schedule for next restart.
I run this periodically and it is a must run after problems with virus etc.

You want to be careful when you are editing, cleaning or doing anything else with your computer's registry. Unfortunately I wasn't careful enough and bought PC Tools Registry Mechanic. I had a known problem with my computer's registry that was getting on my nerves, and during the Christmas sales rush I bought PC Tools Registry Mechanic because it was there. I initially bought the 2011 edition then upgraded to the 2012 edition. I will admit that it sped up my computer, but it did not solve my known problem -- a DLL Error window that keeps popping up -- and it caused a problem or two of its own. I initially ran the 2011 edition while my external drive was connected and turned on (don't do that), and after that whenever I turned the computer on it went into the Install Hardware routine. Technical Support had no solution for this problem, but installing and running the 2012 version solved this problem. However, v. 2012 also seems to have turned off the monitoring of my program use so that Windows Explorer no longer gives the convenient brief menu of my most-used programs, but it always displays the full menu of all of my software, which is annoying. Registry Mechanic also seems to have turned off my Zone Alarm firewall. I had to reinstall ZA in order to get it working again. There is no manual or documentation for the software, the "Restore" function for correcting / undoing problems doesn't always work, and Technical Help is little help. They did give me instructions for downloading the 2012 upgrade when the web site "Download" button wouldn't work, but their solution to a more substantial problem was to tell me to call Microsoft! When you run a scan you are at the mercy of the software and have little control over what it does. I may not run this software again, and I suggest that you not run it at all.

I rate this product one star only because I cannot rate no stars, or negative stars. I did read some of the negative reviews before purchasing it, but I thought they must have been posted by people who don't have much computer experience. How wrong I was. I spent hours trying to register this product, exactly as it was instructed, repeatedly to no avail. Tried to contact customer service for help, but without a completed registration I could not access customer service. I buy a lot from Amazon, but this the only bad product I got from them.
Obviously, I highly do not recommend.

Don't buy this product!

I am returning mine. I received the box sealed with a disk to load, and a Product Key to enter to activate it. I attempted to Install the software, and it aborted with a simple Error Dialog Box, and a button to send me to the PCTools Homepage. No special location to address my problem, just the generic Homepage. There it explained in detail how to load a disk into my computer.

I found a page further on to register a generic complaint, which I did, describing my problem in painstaking detail. The effort took me 10 minutes. I immediately got an automated email from a mail robot with a downloaded Install program. I then tried to run THIS.

This aborted even worse than the other, again with an error message, and a link to their Homepage. I sent in a complaint again, this time with a screen capture of the error message, which says simply "Install Aborted - Contact PCTools".

This time I got a form letter that at least looked like it was sent by a human being. But AGAIN, they simply gave me an install file, told me to use it, then use my Activation Key afterwards. WHAT AFTERWARDS? Like it had done TWO TIMES BEFORE, it aborted before installing, with no explanation except to tell me to contact PCTools.

That's it. This software SUCKS, they provide no competent way to explain the problem, they don't READ your complaints, and they don't seriously attempt to solve the problems.

If these kind of people are supposed to watchdog the subtle problems of your Computer Registry, give them a WIDE BERTH. Meanwhile, I will be returning this turkey for a full refund, and get a program that actually works, and from someone who cares.
