For the 1000 model, oh, the love. Smooth cast, tiny plunk, easy retrieve, and the fish action, hands down phenomenal for the price. My ultralite set up was not complete until this guy was added.
For the 2500, the love is shared! For channel cats, to steelhead, i expected far less than what I got. A reel I will not leave home without no matter if I'm headed to a day at the beach and salt water treasures, or to the lake, for a cast and a nap.
A hands down sucess.
Had to pick up another.
Ultralite fishers, the 1000 model, and a 7" ultralight Shakespeare gx2 is a blast, and I highly recommend it.
Its light, durable, strong, and very capable especially for its price. I'd pair it with 30lb braid and you can take on just about everything inshore and nearshore. Would definitely recommend it to anyone on a budget.
I also own Penn Battle reels, which are about twice the price of a Fierce model. They are great reel as well, but when fighting a big fish, I can't tell you any significant difference. That's why I don't think there is any reason to spend more money on any other brand or model of reel. They work perfectly, and they are built like a tank. You won't be replacing these bad boys very often.
I own Penn Fierce 5000, 6000, model reels, and I got the Fierce 8000 to attach to an 8' Heavy action rod for reef and open water jigging off the Atlantic coast of Florida.
The reel case is well sealed, with a removable handle for maintenance. The spool is drilled out to make the newer models lighter, and the Bail wire is nice and thick with little or no flex (an improvement over the older Fierce models). The drag is easily accessible and adjustable with the top dial. The drag is very strong and can be adjusted mid-fight with ease.
Love these reels, and I won't ever buy another brand, as long as they make them.
When I purchased the Penn Fierce II, I was expecting similar performance. My main issue with this reel is that it isn't smooth. If I have a heavier lure on, I can feel the reel click multiple times when the spool reaches the top of its rotation. The reel has had this issue since I purchased it. I wanted to give it a chance to self-adjust, but it has not worked itself out. I haven't noticed this issue when fighting fish, but crankbaits and other lures with some resistance induce this clicking noise.
This reel does not seem to live up to my expectations of a Penn reel. I realize this is on the cheaper end for Penn, but having poor gear alignment (or whatever this issue is) was really disappointing. It doesn't affect my fishing too much, but I'm worried the problem will become worse.
