From the Inside Flap
Caleb took a picture and sent it to his buddy. Damn, he was fifteen minutes into this phone-a-friend conversation and he still didn't have the oven on. If Xander didn't hurry up with some details Caleb might be stuck having to throw in the towel over this dinner thing and ask Frenchie for some help.
"Those are acorn squash. She did you a solid. All you have to do is slice the ends off so they'll sit flat in a roasting pan and cut them in half. Make sure you scoop out the seeds. Then put some butter and...? Do you have any maple syrup?"
Caleb shrugged his cell between his shoulder and ear and commenced with the cutting. "I'm living in Vermont, what do you think?"
"Well add some of that to the butter and bake it at three-fifty for forty-five minutes."
He put down the knife and straightened his head, which caused his cell to drop, but he was prepared for that and caught it. "That's it?"
"Look, man. I know you didn't call me for my culinary talent. Isn't your brother a gourmet chef?"
Yeah, Ethan was considered to be an amateur only because he didn't make any money with his cooking. Before Caleb replied, Xander went on.
"Judging by our first topic of conversation, you need a Dom handbook, not a Betty Crocker syllabus."
His friend was probably right and although Caleb would have liked to discuss this further he needed to get the squash in the oven. "I gotta go. If I hope to have dinner ready before seven I have to get this cooking."
"One thing more," Xander said. "I want you to take note of what she gave you in the basket."
Caleb scanned the mess laid out before him over the counter and frowned. "I did and it was brutal."
