The lowest setting is not bright enough for fast runs in pitch black, but is OK for jogging. I use the middle light most of the time for faster runs and rough terrain, and the highest setting in pitch black and off road terrain. Most of my runs are less than 2 hours, so the battery last longer than I needed even swapping between the middle and high beam. Lots of fun to run in the dark with this light.
PROS:
• Ultra bright when needed, quick taps between 3 levels
• Fits secure on head, love the strap mechanics
• Works ok over a running/baseball hat
• Works great with winter hat
• Can swamp in a new battery if needed, but a bit tricky to do WHILE running
• Nice tilting action to cast light close to feet or flood further out
• Great coverage and beam of light
CONS:
• Difficult to get between the different modes where it does/does not auto dim
• Starts to hurt forehead after an hour of what (maybe I can loosen it a bit)
• A bit annoying sometimes when the light dims due to running past a reflective road sign
• Tuning if off requires pressing the light through all 3 cycles - really wish long-press turned it off
Overall, they are both very good and I'm happy with them but the Petzl is on another level in terms of comfort as well as performance. The Swift RL is brighter with wider and deeper light coverage and more stable during high speed runs through technical trails with steep rocky hills and abrupt turns. I was also able to set the angle of the light beams just right so I can see far and just below me without having to move my head too much. The lamp stayed in place and did not hamper my running at all. The BioLite HeadLamp 200 is definitely lighter and great for an easy-going run on the local roads at night but not ideal for the pitch black mountain trails at night.
I have it on at full brightness all the time and the battery time is more than enough for my trail runs which typically last 60~90 minutes, depending on how much I feel like running. The Swift RL is easy to use, unobtrusive, very powerful, and quite comfortable. It will now be my go-to night running head lamp. Besides running at night to avoid the heat, I can now see that I'll be able to run in the early evenings or during the mornings during the winter when the sunlight time is much shorter. For an avid runner like me who runs 70~80 miles per week, this is a very sound investment that will pay good dividends for years to come and provides an excellent value. I highly recommend the Petzl Swift RL to serious runners who want to put in some miles during the nights or early mornings before sunrise.
