There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I then email customer support asking if I could get a replacement for the cord. Not only was I denied, but I even asked if I could just buy one. Because I was willing to pay to get the original cord that should work properly. I was told in no way could I even buy one from them. I went through multiple people and nobody would help me.
I then went online, figured out exactly what I needed and through trial and error, I got another cord and figured out that wasn't the problem. The screen would flicker with slight movements. Not wiggling my cable, or desk, but simply something seemed to be loose inside, but it worked perfect with hdmi, but if I was going to use an hdmi, I might well spent $600 less and bought the same thing at 60 htz with a million less problems. (Oh yes, the problems get worse)
Another month after that, i end up having a weird screen flashing with or without Gsync. I had learned how to make the monitor not flicker as badly, but another problem rose where the top of my screen would change brightness while flickering. It was noticeable enough for me to get worried. I had spent over a thousand dollars on this monitor and it was obviously faulty.
I contact customer support again. Through many people, each one told me I'm screwed and theirs nothing they can do.
So, here I am spending hours figuring out how to fix it. I never did fix it, I just figured out how to deal with it. Now it's been about a year with it. I've been in contact with customer support enough over the year that I had gotten sick of it and given up. I haven't contacted customer support for months now because I just lost hope in them helping me.
I've come to see many blogs saying the same thing about this monitor as I did. Everyone loves it. Don't get me wrong. It's beautiful, but for the price I paid, in no way did I want so many problems. It sucks because the flickering at the top has gotten a little better, but my screen flickering on and off has gotten worse. I'm just waiting for the day it eventually flickers and never turns back on.
I've spoiled myself with such a luxury monitor. the next monitor I buy will be this size, with this resolution, but it will not be this monitor. I've had many good experiences with ASUS, and surprisingly, this is the one and only/ worst experience I've had with there equipment. Seriously, a lot of people have serious problems with this monitor after a few months. It's kind of a gamble whether you get a working one or not. I had absolutely no problems with my monitor until 2 months of owning it and it only got worse.
I love and hate this monitor. You may ask why I haven't switched. Well, that's because I can't really find anything of this quality. It really is a spectacular monitor and I've made every friend whose seen it drool at its glory. The flickering isn't something that is so often that it's unusable. It never happens while gaming because it requires movement of the monitor for it to flicker. Like stepping to hard on the ground, or knocking the desk, moving the mouse pad (weird right?), or other odd ways to make it flicker, but it rarely happens in critical gaming moments.
The amazing resolution, the beautiful curved screen, the everything about this monitor is simply sexy as hell, but when you pay this much for a monitory, you should not be dealing with so many problems. ORRR if I ask for a freaking video cable that costs you barely a dollar, please for the love of god, send it to me. Or at least try to help me out here. Customer service for this monitor is the worst and many people online can tell you about the unique problems each monitor has. This monitor and I seriously have a love hate relationship.
I usually only review products that absolutely astonish me. If something is worth a 5 star, I will go online and be the one person to tell you that it's a good product because I think on average, more people go online to write angry review than they do to go online and write good reviews. This is my first 1 star review on Amazon. Not only have I rated everything 5 star up to this point, I'm not even saying I haven't gotten bad or 1 star items before, but this is the one item I felt that a year later, a proper review about this should be posted. Because I'm not angry and I'd like to think I'm not bias. I thought an honest review to those who are about to spend over $1,000 should be warned that this product is known for its faulty quality and the customer support experience I had was not fun at all.
I read about a ton of complaints regarding light bleed at the corners that scared me. The Amazon listing even states "Product Alert: IPS (In-Plane-Switching) is a technology for LCD displays that offers users wider viewing angles and bolder colors by allowing more light to pass through the panel. As a result, IPS panels can exhibit a slight glow around the edges and corners (also known as light bleed), which is entirely normal." I figured that even if my panel exhibited this condition I probably wouldn't care because I'm not that picky about stuff like that. Truth is, even if my panel has that problem, I don't notice it or don't care. It's absolutely, perfectly fine. Maybe I got a great panel, maybe I'm not picky, but no matter what I'm happy and that's what matters.
I've recently transitioned most of my gaming from console to PC and in my upgrade I wanted a nicer monitor than my old cheapey 1080p display. I wanted G-Sync since I have an Nvidia card and I wanted to go as big as my desk would allow. I knew I wanted IPS since I wanted accurate color representation since I do some photo editing. Everything came back to the ASUS PG279Q. I love it. The size is perfect and the slim bezels are great. The stand is fantastic and has a lot of range of movement. It's all smooth and well supported; even if my desk shakes the monitor and stand seem perfectly still without any wobble. The stand has optional red LEDs that can be lit around the base and the 3-inch long ROG logo in the right front corner. Build quality is standard ASUS affair, which is to say very good. I'm looking forward to buying an ASUS/Nvidia BFGD display in the summer.
The OSD is phenomenal. There's a joystick behind the panel that can be used to navigate the display settings which is AWESOME. every other monitor I've ever used makes you navigate the display with buttons that are poorly labeled and have weak tactile feedback. The joystick moves in 4 directions and pushes in to confirm settings. I almost never use it but it's awesome. Another great feature of the OSD is the fact that it can display it's own frame count so you don't have to rely on 3rd party programs to show you FPS. The G-sync works exactly as advertised. It's totally tear-free no matter how many frames the GPU puts out. Playing super intense games like Witcher 3 at ultra I'll sometimes see frame count go down into the 40s on a GTX1070 but I almost never notice it with G-Sync.
In terms of the panel and display itself, I'm incredibly impressed. I'm by no means an expert or a "pixel peeper" but I feel like my money was well spent with no complaints from me. No dead pixels, super-high adaptive refresh (with overclock!), low latency, and super accurate color representation. I know it sounds dumb, but even running the Windows desktop at 144hz is cool. Window and mouse movement is so SMOOOTH. Every game I've played looks better on this display, at this resolution. I was afraid that I wouldn't notice a difference between 1080p and 1440p, but it's noticeable. It's not as big a difference between 720p and 1080p, but it's there. Games running at this resolution and at 60fps or beyond look INCREDIBLE. I can imagine 4K is better but I'm not rich enough to afford that much GPU horsepower.

As my old monitor was hooked up through DVI-D, I purchased a DisplayPort cable in advance. I bought Amazon's own DisplayPort cable v1.2 (AmazonBasics DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable - 0.9 m) as a back up. I had read that the monitor does in fact come with a cable, but the quality of it wasn't great. You do actually get a HDMI cable in the box too, but I am not sure what version it is. I would presume that since the monitor runs natively at 144hz with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, it will be fit for purpose.
The monitor arrives very well packaged. My order came through DPD, and the external box was slightly damaged. Thankfully, the screen itself was very well protected internally, and hadn't suffered any damage.
After setting everything up, I configured the screen to perform at its best. I used this guide: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/asus-pg279q-rog-swift-27-inch-165hz-monitor,review-33467-3.html. It looks absolutely beautiful, especially when compared to my old 144hz TN monitor. You'll want to make sure you change the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor through the Windows settings (right click on desktop, and select display settings).
To test the monitor, I played a bit of Battlefield 1. It absolutely blew me away. I used the recommended settings as per GeForce Experience. The game ran as smooth as butter, and the monitor's standby light glowing red informed me that G-SYNC had kicked in. I didn't suffer any motion blur or tearing. I jumped onto Overwatch next, and I could see a vast improvement there too. Everything was much more vibrant and sharp. I was definitely impressed.
As you may have already read, this monitor is known for suffering from awful backlight bleed and dead pixels, so I ran a few tests, and it turns out I was very lucky. The backlight bleed is almost non-existent. There is a slight glow in the top right corner, but it's completely unnoticeable during normal use. I do, however, have a dead pixel in the top right of the monitor. It's far enough toward the edge of the monitor to not cause me any annoyance, and can only really be seen when looking at a white background, or other light colours.
I am incredibly impressed with this monitor, and I've only been using it for a day. It does everything I need it to, and more. This premium quality comes at a price, but I would say that the price is justified. Here are my pros and cons for the monitor:
Pros:
- The monitor makes modern games look incredible. It's hard to put into words how beautiful everything looks, and thanks to the 144hz refresh rate and G-SYNC, screen tearing is a non-issue.
- The monitor comes with a DisplayPort cable, HDMI cable, Euro kettle lead, UK kettle lead, and a cable to allow you to use the USB ports of the monitor.
- As this is an IPS panel, you can see the screen clearly from any angle without any discolouration.
- Even taking into account the eye-watering cost, the monitor is worth every penny.
- The buttons on the side of the monitor are easy to use. Activating the turbo mode to increase the refresh rate to 165hz is easy, but absolutely not necessary.
Cons:
- Backlight bleed and dead pixels are an issue. I got lucky, and only had the one dead pixel, and minimal backlight bleed. For the price you pay, I would like to think that quality control should be considerably better.
A few tips:
- Make sure you change the refresh rate of the monitor to 144hz. To do this, right click on your desktop, select Display settings, Display adapter properties, select the Monitor tab, then change the drop down menu to 144hz (I used Windows 10, but the process on Windows 7 is very similar). If the refresh rate is locked to 60hz, ensure you are using either a HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
- If you plan on sending the monitor back until you receive one with no backlight bleed or dead pixels, note that Amazon will allow you one exchange before insisting you instead take a refund. This information was provided to me by an Amazon representative over live chat before I purchased the product, but your mileage may vary depending on who you speak to, and how assertive and persistent you are.
- You can check that G-SYNC is working by the colour of the standby light on the bottom right corner of the monitor. If it's red, it means that G-SYNC is enabled. Note that G-SYNC only works with NVIDIA cards, and unless your card is a GTX 960 or above, I wouldn't really recommend buying this monitor. Another way to test if G-SYNC is working is to open NVIDIA Control Panel, click on Change resolution, then select Display at the top, and tick G-SYNC Indicator. Every time you open a game, a notification will appear on the left to let you know that G-SYNC is enabled.
- Make sure that your PC can handle 1440p at a high enough refresh rate, or you won't get the most out of this monitor. I am using a GTX 1080Ti, and an Intel i7 7700k, and I am consistently blown away by the image quality.
In summary, if you have a PC that's capable of 1440p at high enough settings, this monitor is the way forward. The upgrade from a 1080p TN panel is incredible, and is truly something that you need to see to believe. Be warned that your monitor will likely suffer from backlight bleed or dead pixels. If this doesn't bother you, or you have the time and patience to return/refund until you receive the perfect product, then go ahead. You won't regret it.
Let's start with the good things. The panel is an absolute joy to look at: great colours, great viewing angles, and good brightness. And with a refresh rate of 165 hz (overclocked), playing games on it is awesome.
The design is, in my opinion, the best out there. Build quality is great too, and the stand is robust and does a pretty good job of keeping the monitor firmly in place. The speakers are pretty bad, but they do the job for occasional listening. Lastly, the OSD is the best out there. Easy to use and everything you will ever need is a couple of clicks away.
So far an amazing monitor, right?
Not even close. Backlight bleeding is a plague, and it surprises me that we still have those issues in a 700 £ monitor! Seriously ASUS?!
First unit of mine came with dead speakers, dead pixels, and a small defect in the bottom right corner. Backlight bleeding was present in 3 of the 4 corners. Something that my cheap 99£ IPS ASUS monitor did not have. Impressive. When I did receive the second unit I immediately suspected the first one was refurbished. The buttons seemed more "loose", and the panel had a strange yellow tint on it. I'm not sure, but if this is the case, selling refurb products as new ones...shame on you ASUS.
The second unit was perfect except for some pretty bad backlight bleeding. It was noticeable everywhere: youtube full screen, games, hell, even during normal windows use, especially on dark backgrounds!
And lastly, g-sync. I don't know if i was unlucky but getting this thing to work was a pain! It never worked the first time I fired up a game: I had to manually disable it and then re-enable it. Every time it activated the screen used to go off for half a second and then went back on again. This on BOTH UNITS. Watching youtube was awful: on every single video in full screen I had this "flicker". At this point i though this was just how it worked, until i received the competing model from acer: no flicker, g-sync works EVERY TIME, and no dead pixels or build quality issues.
At this point I asked myself: i paid 119 £ more for a product that had the same specs, a crappy QA, and issues after issues! Do I recommend it? NO! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Unless you have money to waste, do not buy this! It is overpriced, has a lot of issues, and good luck getting a working one!

Check out my attached pictures for a good idea of what the glow looks like. It is only really noticeable in a dark room or when playing through dark scenes. The bottom right corner is always the worst. The further away you sit, the less glow but you'll always see it from a normal viewing distance.
After trying out a couple VA panels and even a TN, I decided that the image quality in these IPS panels are still better than those other technologies even with the glow. The input lag is also very low in this panel.
I don't think this monitor is worth $1028 CAD after tax though. I suggest looking at the cheaper alternative options offered by AOC, Acer, and ViewSonic or waiting for a sale. You can find them on Amazon by searching for "165hz IPS 1440p".
