(I mention the seller because for some products like this that are often counterfeited or misrepresented, the product quality may vary by seller.)
After reading through numerous product listings and reviews, I decided to go with a genuine Philips bulb rather than the much cheaper generics also listed on Amazon. It appears the Philips is brighter and lasts much longer, according to reviews at least.
This product is the bulb only, and does not include the cage around the bulb. This saves you a few dollars, but it requires slightly more work than just plugging the new bulb with cage into the back of your TV.
It was nice of the seller to include instructions. The installation is easy to do, but for more clarity just search on Youtube for videos explaining the process. It's even better than reading it off the sheet.
All you'll need is a screwdriver, a small pliers or adjustable wrench and some latex gloves to remove the old bulb from the cage and attach the new one.
Do not touch the bulb with your bare hands. The oils from your fingers will stay on the bulb and may shorten its lifespan dramatically. (I learned this the hard way once replacing a couple of halogen bulbs around my house. Luckily those bulbs were 1/10th the price of this bulb!)
I may have to adjust the color on my set now that the bulb is installed. The bulb seems to give off a slightly "bluer" light than the original. Not a big deal, just something to know about.
Finally, on my Sony model at least, go into the settings menu of your TV and select "replace lamp". This lets the TV know the lamp was replaced and resets the bulb usage timer, which will get rid of any false warnings to replace the bulb. I noticed in some reviews people forgot to do this step, and mistakenly believe they got a bad bulb when the warning messages pop up shortly after installation.
And here's a tip to keep your bulb running even longer: In the settings menu (again on my Sony at least), select "power saving" mode. The lower power usage will lengthen the life of the bulb and as a side effect helps improve black levels on the screen.
All in all, seems to be a good bright official Philips bulb. If for some reason it dies prematurely I'll come back and update my review, but as of now it's working perfectly. And Prime shipping got it to me in 2 days so I couldn't be happier.
You spent a lot of money on your TV because you wanted a nice, bright picture....right? Avoid buyer's remorse. Spend a little more and get a good bulb like this one.
Picture is nice and bright with great color, quick warmup. Be ready to vacuum bulb cage cavity. Remember to go into tv menu Settings/General/Lamp replacement and indicate you replaced the bulb so the bulb replacement clock resets so the bulb warning message doesn’t appear anymore.
It is the bulb only as advertised. Changing it out with the old one is not too much trouble but beware, if your old bulb unit is an off brand the screw that attaches the wire to the side tab might not fit this bulb. Luckily I had kept an older genuine assembly so I had one that would work.
I am sure you could get one at a hardware store but that would mean taking the bulb there to be sure. If you are not sure about it consider buying the full assembly unit rather than just the loose bulb.
