Software is from Cyberlink and says ultimate Playback and Burning Suite for Blue-ray Disc, but asks you to upgrade after installation. Cannot play HD formats like AVCHD (from HD camcorder). The upgrade cost for the playback piece is $[...]. There are two more pieces to upgrade but I have to see their upgrade price. Please visit the cyberlink website.
almost like the included starter software somehow expires and I get many many failures. I stopped using it for BR movies long ago
and just use my PS3. But if not wanting to watch a BR movie the rest of it is awesome and does what I want. Writes fast/reads fast.
like cinema etc which really enhanced the movie.
Well I watched Avatar on 2 separate nights and on the second night I came back inserted the disk and instead of playing the screen was black screen. When I moved my mouse the menu buttons showed up. When I pushed the play button it said action prohibited or some such nonsense.
I than went to Pioneer and upgraded the Bios (easy to do) inserted the Blu-Ray disc same problem.
I was just about to spend my money and buy an upgrade to the paid version when I decided to play with the software.
Hidden in the bottom menu bar is a square with 9 square dots on it a "more functions bar". Click on it and a little screen comes up with arrows numbers and in the middle A big OK button I clicked on that button and wallah my Blu-Ray disc began to play.
So I'm not sure if Cyberlink added a glitch to get people to upgrade or if Avatar added some weird extra step for copy protection.
I'm going to dock the recorder a star for this glitch but it might be unfounded.
Amazon won't let me post the Pioneer firmware update site, but you can Google it.
As others have said, the package contains no software, no rails, connectors or even screws. Since I was simply replacing another drive so I could burn Blu-ray disks, there was nothing to it. It's inexpensive, fast and reliable. Five stars!
Update: FYI, I just burned 22.4 GB of photos onto a TDK BD-R. It took 11 minutes at roughly 10X burn speed using ImgBurn freeware.
Update 2: Even after years of use, I like this burner so much that I installed it in my new Win 10 muscle machine.
