We bought the Alpine PKG-RSE2 DVD player for our 1997 Chevy Astro AWD, specifically for a family road trip from Wisconsin to Florida in February 2009.

Before buying the player we did a lot of research online and in stores. At one point we actually purchased a different model (not from Alpine) at a local store. I'd commented to the salesperson while we were purchasing it that I was concerned the screen was too small and the picture wasn't incredibly good (but the price was about $100 less than the Alpine). His actual response: "Well, what do you expect? It's not an Alpine." Ugh.

That night, after purchasing the lesser model I kept thinking over what the salesguy said. In the morning I decided it was ridiculous to get such a low-end model just to save a relatively small amount of money. We returned the DVD player that day, and bought a new Alpine online from one of the sellers through Amazon. The seller we bought it from was selling it new for $499 (January 09). I see the price from current sellers has shot up again (June 09) but I suspect if you shop around/wait a bit you can find a similar price.

INSTALLATION
The instructions that come with the player aren't very clear which made installation fairly frustrating. My husband is extremely handy with cars and electronics, and it still took him about 6 hours to install the player, so keep that in mind if you're installing it yourself. It's likely you can find a local electronic store or car shop to install it for you if you don't want to tackle it on your own.

PICTURE & SOUND
Once my husband installed it he and I hopped in the back seats and put in a movie. The picture is excellent and the screen is huge. The sound - through the car speakers and/or through the wireless headphones is terrific.

Bigger screen with better resolution at half the price of the dealer installed unit. Nuff said.

Update: The unit failed almost exactly one year from my purchase. After examining it, I found that it didn't work when mounted, but did work when I had it down and in my hands. Pretty good indication of a broken solder joint. I contacted Alpine and they confirmed that was somewhat common on a batch of these units. They repaired it under warantee. Even if your unit is out of warantee, this is a super easy fix for someone who is electronically inclined, or a cheap fix for you to pay for at an electronics store. Anyway, I STILL give the unit 5-stars... I just wanted to put this out there in case anyone else had a similar problem.

This unit doe NOT have video out feature. If you are looking to use this unit as a stand-alone dvd player for the car, this unit will work. However, if you want to hook it up to other screens, this unit will NOT do it. I have been told by Alpine that they have removed this feature because of Copyright laws and they were forced to remove the feature. I was dissapointed because I paid over $500.00 for this DVD player and it doesn't even have a simple feature that a $100 dvd player has. Other than that, the unit is fine.

I bought this player eighteen months ago for the kids and it is still working well with a nice clear picture. (I always expect these electronic items to fail one day after the warranty expires.) The ability to save the current viewing location in the movie is great: no chorus of 'Aww Dad!' when I turn off the ignition.

Update: Display died about 2 years ago.

The Alpine PKG flip down DVD player is the best investment I have ever made. Not to mention that it was the cheapest on Amazon.com. The product has worked very well in my 2009 Chevy Tahoe. The 10 inch monitor does not obscure the rear view window as much as I thought it would. The included wireless headphones are a great addition. You can listen to your own cd's or radio up front. The unit comes with an FM modulator for this reason. You can also purchase extra sets of headphones for very reasonable prices. The LCD screen offers a very clear and sharp image. Almost blu-ray quality. My 6 y.o. son is able to quietly watch his favorite DVD's.

I would not recommend self installation unless you are very good at this type of installation. It requires drilling holes into the headliner. I took it to MobileOne Audio in Houston and had it professianlly installed for $150. I would highly recommend this name brand product. Alpine is a leader in car audio.

Purchased mine from a car toys in JUN 2011 - unit worked remarkably great - I splurged for the name Alpine over the cheaper audiovox alternatives. Just this week, we have all lights but no video on the screen - I suppose I got a decent life out of the $900 investment? I do miss that it did not have an HDMI input to feed from tablets/ipods. Will definitely look for that in my replacement.

First off, I would like to say that the Alpine PKG-RSE2 is a great system (positive comments in the last paragraph). That said, I would never buy anything Alpine ever again.

I ordered this item through Amazon and it was fulfilled by Car Audio Closeout in California. When the unit arrived, I took it to an install shop. During the install, they could not clear up the static that was coming through the speakers through the FM Switching Box. So, they attempted to hard line the audio into the AUX port on the vehicle entertainment system. This also would not work. After some time with the Alpine tech support, the installer and Alpine agreed that it was likely a faulty unit.

No worries. It's Alpine, right? The best car audio/video ever. Not. I called them and asked where I could send the unit for warranty work. They told me that Amazon is not an authorized dealer (nor is Car Audio Closeout) so the warranty was null and void. Shame on me for not reading the fine print on Alpine's web site, but that's what it says and they were not going to budge (regardless of who I talked to up the food chain). I guess I assumed that what I bought factory new had the factory warranty, even (especially) if I bought it on Amazon. Shame on Alpine for not stepping up and covering their factory new product. Buyer beware.

Anyway, I contacted Car Audio Closeout (the fulfiller) next. They were extremely helpful and (thankfully) sent me a brand new unit immediately. The new unit was installed and works great.

If you do plan to buy this unit from Amazon anyway (despite the fact that no warranty comes with it), the picture, color, and sound (hard lined, not FM) are phenomenal.
