Top customer reviews
The Beolit 15 looks just like the old one. Gone is the buggy Airplay-connection as the Beolit 15 comes with Bluetooth now, also Apt-X is supported for best quality. Soundwise the Beolit 15 is a big improvement over the old one. The bass has more punch, especially mid-bass is more aggressive now (probably thanks to the both passive radiators at the sides), but most important: sound is nearly non-directional. Especially treble response suffered quite a lot on the old one when not listened exactly from front. The new one has 2 tweeters at the front edges and one at the backside, this doesn't give you quite true 360° sound but pretty close, it sounds pretty good even completely from behind and manages to fill a large area with sound much better. Treble is not as harsh as on the A2, but clearer than on the Beolit 12. The Beolit 12 is quite a bit louder though, I would say sound 50%, but it doesn't sound that good at close to maximum, while the Beolit 15 sounds still the same at its top volume with hardly any bass-loss and no distortion at all. It is quite a bit louder than an Infinity One or a Bose Soundlink III for example but the Beolit 15 sounds much more powerful than those as it manages to keep all the bass at high levels as well.
I thought the mids to be slightly recessed, but overall sound was pretty good nevertheless, one of the best I have heard for a portable speaker. T
A Klipsch KMC-3 is definitely more powerful and louder, but it doesn't sound that good at normal listening levels, it misses the refinement of the Beolit 15, also keep in mind that the KMC-3 is larger and it needs extra batteries for portable use.
Of course I couldn't test battery life, but I doubt you will reach the claimed 24 hours under normal cirumstances. If you don't mind the larger size, but need something really good sounding for your home or garden, the Beolit 15 should do the trick. You hardly have to make any compromises on sound, it really sounds mature and full-bodied, just like a full-grown system. I already thought the A2 sounded good, but the Beolit gives the music this extra depth!
Before reviewing the Beolit 15, I'd like to take a minute to describe what I was trying to accomplish and how I concluded that 2 Beolit 15 provided the best solution.
As an audiophile, I enjoy sitting down inside and listening to music in its purest form. I wanted to be able to enjoy the same indoor listening experience outside on the deck. After auditioning several outdoor speakers I was unimpressed, so it was impossible to justify the expense of running wire to mount mediocre outdoor speakers to the sound system from in the house. I considered bringing inside speakers outside when needed, but ruled that option out as too much of an inconvenience.
Initially I auditioned a single Beolit 15 side by side with the BeoPlay A2. Both produce amazing sound for such a small form factor, but the Beolit 15 has greater dynamic range and lower bass response than the A2. The Beolit 15 also creates a superior 360 degree illusion than the A2. Sold on the single Beolit, I then auditioned two Beolit 15 paired together. The stereophonic experience and sound stage created by pairing these together will rival or surpass almost any indoor system with a preamp and amplifier. Truly amazing.
I've attached a photo of the speaker placement I settled on after some experimentation. As you can see, the speakers are placed about 10 feet apart and slightly angled inwards towards the couch in front of the fireplace. This speaker placement creates a sweet spot at the center of the couch where the speakers will virtually disappear. The voices seem to emanate from inside the fireplace and the remaining sounds surround the listener with rich clear sound. There's something going on inside the Beolit 15 that separates the sounds in such a way that music I've heard a hundred times before sounds new again. You'll hear nuances like the breath of the saxophone player between notes. Close your eyes and you can perceive where the background singers were standing when the recording was made. They're just amazing paired together.
If you do buy two and use them paired, experiment with the speaker placement before passing judgement. When placed too close together they may sound muddy and distorted. But find the sweet spot and be amazed.
At half volume, the speakers are loud enough to disturb the neighbors. Unfortunately, at half volume I've only been able to get about 2 and a half hours of playing time before plugging them into an outlet. This is unacceptable, especially when B&O advertises 24 hour battery life. Perhaps pairing them is draining more power. I'll experiment with one and update the review at a later date.
Another disappointment is the lack of Apple Airplay. Sometimes when having a party that flows inside and out, it's nice to stream the same music inside and out. Airplay makes this easy. If the aux port worked with pairing you could work around this with an airport express or other Airplay enabled router, but as I mentioned before the aux port only works with a single unit. The A9 works with Airplay, so B&O could've made the Beolit 15 work with it as well. As a side note, the Beolit 15 has a mini USB port inside the power cord compartment in the back for updating the firmware. I've already updated the firmware once so I'm hopeful that perhaps they can "fix" this issue in a future update. If so, I'll amend the review accordingly.
Overall, I'm very happy with the pair of Beolit 15. But the poor battery life, inability to play them paired through the aux port, and lack of Airplay streaming loses them at least one star. But honestly, these little nit picks are not enough to trade them for another option that covers these issues at the cost of sound quality. I just don't believe there is a better portable bluetooth speaker on the market than the Bang and Olufsen Beolit 15.
Amazing balanced sound
When paired with another Beolit 15, the two will create a sound stage that will rival or exceed many more expensive component systems.
Battery life is only a fraction of what's advertised. At half volume I've only been able to get 2 1/2 hours of play when paired with another Beolit 15.
When paired with another Beolit 15, the aux input doesn't work, you must stream via Bluetooth when paired. This is a design flaw that should be fixed.
No Apple Airplay option.
