This PNY drive is very reasonable priced. The reviews were positive and it comes with a 2015 version of Acronis True Image for the crucial process of copying the content of the original booting disk onto this fast SSD and manipulating the BIOS to boot from the DSS.
Making a copy of the system onto to the SSD using True Image was easy. I compared the two and they looked identical. The problem was altering the BIOS setup to make the system recognize the PNY as the booting disk. That was a technical support mess: In the old BIOS it was a matter of telling the computer to boot from certain drive. Nowadays it is more complicated, aggravated by skinny manuales which provide no information for things like this.
Dell refused to help me because. According to the rep. it was not a defect but and enhancement issue.(Dell does not provide any information at all about the BIOS setup). They referred me to PNY. PNY did not respond to my phone call, apparently because it was a holiday (Monday Jan. 2). The automatic answering system asked to press a number for technical support. I waited 54 minutes at which point I hung. I got nothing, not even a message telling me to call another day. True image does not even talk to you. Hey, this is a freebie. Do you expect any tech support? Instead, the web site offered an upgrade to the version of 2017. That mede my blood boil.
Bottom line, after several frustrating hours it occurred to me that if I plugged the PNY in the same place where the original drive was connected and forced the BIOS to its original default setup it would go to the original port where now resides the new guy (the SSD). That worked.
PNY SSD drive made a difference in my computer. The 435 gigabytes, which is less of what their claimed size of 480 gigs. is adequate for the OS plus Microsoft Office which in its new incarnation refuses to install on anything but the C: Drive. The rest of the apps peacefully find their home in the mechanical drive in the partition D: and E:
PNY SSD is a nice product with a so, so tech support. At least is what I got during the holiday season.
First of all, I did not use the Acronis software code that came with the device. I always start fresh whenever I can, and Windows 10 makes that process easier than ever, but you must be running Windows 10 on your old hard drive for this to work:
- Backup the files you want to keep on OneDrive, a USB, or an external hard drive if you can.
- Download Windows 10 and create an install disc/USB.
- Switch out the HDD for the SSD and boot up from the install media*.
- When it asks for the product key, click "I don't have a product key".
- Once Windows 10 goes online, it will see that it's the same system and activate automatically.
The Samsung EVO 850 comes with software that helps you test your drive, keeps track of its age, and automatically changes settings in Windows to get the most out of the SSD. The PNY has none of that, but I don't think most users would really miss it. It also doesn't come with any cables or brackets, which is standard, but it does include a spacer for those that may need one. Although this may be one of the prettiest computer components I have ever seen, where the PNY really shines is its speed.
According to PNY, this drive should deliver up to 550MB/s in sequential reading, and 520MB/s in sequential writing (550/520 in shorthand, higher numbers are better for both). The Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM) provides up to 540/520 and the Crucial BX200 240GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - CT240BX200SSD1 tops out at 540/490. In user tests, the Samsung usually performs right on the mark, but the Crucial seems to have occasional problems according to its reviewers. The PNY CS1311, on the other hand, often outperforms its own benchmarks in both my tests and the tests done by other reviewers (attached image).
This model only comes with a 3 year warranty, so if the Samsung EVO 850 is a comparable price I would buy the Samsung for its 5 year coverage. However, SSDs are known for their reliability, so do what feels right to you.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I would absolutely recommend this drive to anyone that I like, and the Crucial to anyone I don't. I will update later on if anything changes.
*On some older systems, the Serial ATA interface may be set up in "Legacy" or "IDE" mode (mine was). I recommend searching online to verify that your BIOS is set to AHCI BEFORE installing Windows, assuming it supports AHCI.
Test machine:
ASUS K53E
Intel Core i5-2450M (2 cores @ 2.50GHz)
4GB DDR3-1333 SDRAM
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

For just above ₹5000, this is the best and the most affordable 240GB SSD available in the market right now. The other cheapest option happens to be from Kingston, but you need to shell out around ₹5700 for that.
What's in the box:
1. SSD
2. 2.5mm spacer
3. Instruction manual with Acronis True Image 2011 license
Now you do get a license code for Acronis True Image 2011, but you need to go to the link given in the instruction manual to download the software and use it. Personally, I did not go for that because I had both Easeus Todo Backup Free and Easeus Partition Master.
If you are trying to use Easeus Todo Backup, please proceed carefully, as I ran into an issue where the boot image was not copied into the SSD from my 1TB stock WD HDD during cloning and I was stuck at the forst screen, which stated that there was "No Bootable Device". So I had to connect my HDD again, format the SSD and follow the procedure again, this time with Partition Master. So before you erase your OS data from the source or HDD, please check carefully if you have cloned the entire OS data or not.
I would recommend both Acronis True Image and Easeus Partition Master for cloning or migrating OS data from HDD to SSD.
Upon testing, its clear that booting from SSD yields way better results in real time. I used to get to the Windows 10 lockscreen in 50-60 seconds while booting from the HDD. Upon booting from SSD, the boot time has drastically reduced to a mere 9-10 seconds.
Similar case with apps as well. MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint took just 3 seconds to open, while on HDD they would've taken upto 30 seconds to open. Photoshop CC 2015 opens up in about 4 seconds as well.
Games like WWE 2K16 open in 5-6 seconds as well, way quicker than the over 1 minute time that they would've taken through HDD.
Overall, this is a great buy, and the pricing makes it even sweet. Remeber to install it in the HDD bay only, as that will be the SATA 3 port with speeds upto 6GB/s if you're using a laptop running atleast a 5th Gen processor.
P.S.: The 2.5mm spacer isn't much of a use, both in the HDD bay as well as in the HDD caddy if you have a 9.5mm CD drive, but it might come in handy if you have a 12.7mm CD drive installed in your laptop.
Also you need to allocate the space and format the SSD before using it from the Windows Disk Management. You'll be prompted to choose between GPT and MBR, so you need to select GPT.
With the drive they provided a download link and licence key for software to backup, clone, clean, (etc) hard drives.
I expect if you install this in a desktop you will likely need a bracket.
For laptops you’ll need an cable or external case to put this or your original drive in
My only complaint is with the software that they provided.
I didn’t find a problem with how capable the software is. My problem was with some missing instructions.
Cloning the hard drive didn’t work the first two tries. My laptop wouldn’t boot when I installed the new drive.
After looking through their help files. (The ones you only check when you have a problem) I found that I was supposed to install the new drive in my laptop and put my old drive in an external case in order for the laptop to boot from the new drive after cloning. I also used their software to create a boot recovery disk in order to run the cloning since I didnt’ have a drive capable of booting installed in the computer during the process.
I’m not docking any points for this though since I wasn’t even expecting the software to come with the drive.

What initially attaracted me was the price, which was a steal when compared to samsung and sandisk, though it uses TLC inspite of MLC, what makes it worth the purchase is its untethered warranty of 3 years not bounded by the amount of data transferred.
The transfer rate varies from 480-540 mbps which made the booting time very sweet.
All in all it gets a thumbs up from me.
Anyone looking for a solid Primary drive for their OS I would highly recommend this one as it is fast and has decent space for the price when compared to other brands.
