Great, No-Frills SSD

I was hoping to find an inexpensive, high-quality SSD to replace the slow and unstable hard drive on my secondary computer. It had gotten so bad that I would avoid using it at all costs, even though it is far more powerful than my tablet. That's where this PNY CS1311 SSD comes in. The price was nice at just under $60 for the 240 GB model, and the measured performance was arguably the highest among the competition.

First of all, I did not use the Acronis software code that came with the device. I always start fresh whenever I can, and Windows 10 makes that process easier than ever, but you must be running Windows 10 on your old hard drive for this to work:
- Backup the files you want to keep on OneDrive, a USB, or an external hard drive if you can.
- Download Windows 10 and create an install disc/USB.
- Switch out the HDD for the SSD and boot up from the install media*.
- When it asks for the product key, click "I don't have a product key".
- Once Windows 10 goes online, it will see that it's the same system and activate automatically.

The Samsung EVO 850 comes with software that helps you test your drive, keeps track of its age, and automatically changes settings in Windows to get the most out of the SSD. The PNY has none of that, but I don't think most users would really miss it. It also doesn't come with any cables or brackets, which is standard, but it does include a spacer for those that may need one. Although this may be one of the prettiest computer components I have ever seen, where the PNY really shines is its speed.

According to PNY, this drive should deliver up to 550MB/s in sequential reading, and 520MB/s in sequential writing (550/520 in shorthand, higher numbers are better for both). The Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM) provides up to 540/520 and the Crucial BX200 240GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - CT240BX200SSD1 tops out at 540/490. In user tests, the Samsung usually performs right on the mark, but the Crucial seems to have occasional problems according to its reviewers. The PNY CS1311, on the other hand, often outperforms its own benchmarks in both my tests and the tests done by other reviewers (attached image).

This model only comes with a 3 year warranty, so if the Samsung EVO 850 is a comparable price I would buy the Samsung for its 5 year coverage. However, SSDs are known for their reliability, so do what feels right to you.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I would absolutely recommend this drive to anyone that I like, and the Crucial to anyone I don't. I will update later on if anything changes.

*On some older systems, the Serial ATA interface may be set up in "Legacy" or "IDE" mode (mine was). I recommend searching online to verify that your BIOS is set to AHCI BEFORE installing Windows, assuming it supports AHCI.

I built my son a computer for Christmas and this was my first time working with SSD's and Windnows 10. The hard drive works well with a very noticeable difference in the speed of data access especially during game play. One difference I noticed from the last time I built a PC (several years ago) was after installing the second SSD I had to use the disk manager to set up the hard drive. Luckily, Google walked me through the process and I got to learn something new.

Best Bargain

Perfect. It worked so great in my sister's PC that I bought a second one in conjunction to a new Inspiron 13. I cloned the HDD(why would they put a HDD in a 2in1?) and installed the SSD. No problems. This SSD is fast. A much better deal than it's Samsung equivalent. I bought the 240GB versions for $60 a piece as opposed to paying $85-90 for the Samsung Evo 850. Definitely worth the price. AND it comes with a free license to the Acronis True Image software to clone your old disk if your upgrading a current system. Software worked flawlessly, cloning the entire disk at one time, and now my Inspiron runs off an SSD.

This was purchased to upgrade an older custom build of mine. Specs were an AMD Phenom II x6 core 3.4ghz CPU, 16 Gigs DDR3 RAM 1333mhz, ASUS MOBO (plus some other bells and whistles). I had a 750 Gig WD 7200 RPM HD with 64mb cache that this SSD replaced. My PC wasn't super slow, but I wanted to have the latest and the greatest, so I purchased this one because of the price and positive reviews. I also purchased another brand (which will remain anonymous) to replace the HD on my laptop. After installation I ran a few different benchmark tests and I achieved close to the speeds found in the specifications. I was happy with that. When I compared the test results from this drive to that of the other I purchased, which happened to be a bit more expensive, I was surprised to find that the read speed was actually slightly higher on this one.

I have now owned this drive for about a year, and have not had one single problem with it. I often require it to handle heavy loads, but have yet to notice any issues. I have already recommended this product to several people, and would do it again.

It works fine, no issues. Used to replace mechanical drive in a mid-2012 13" macbook pro with 4GB RAM. Very noticeable improvement in boot-up and program loading times.

This is not my first SSD drive, but the first PNY branded one I've tried. I have been using the Crucial MX series but this one was a little cheaper if I remember correctly, so I thought I would give it a shot. I can't tell any difference between this and the Crucial hardware in everyday use.

Great Performance Boost for Older Systems

Maybe modern SSDs don't suffer from short lives as the early versions did, but this relatively small SSD works perfectly as my Linux system drive and allows me to retain my HDD drives for data storage and backups. I built my system in 2005 and it was getting a little old as far as its basic performance, so when I decided to update it, using an SSD was an obvious choice. As a system disk, this boots amazingly fast, and makes the overall performance acceptable again.

Fast SSD for a good price

This was well packaged and came exactly as described. It does work fast. The advertised "up to" speeds are the same as my Toshiba Q300 SSD but this doesn't seem to hit the same speeds. Still fast though compared to HDD. It came with a little plastic spacer so it doesn't rattle around in the laptop. Good price too when I got it on sale. It would be nice if they provided a cloning software. My Samsung SSD provided one on their support site.
