What isn't the same is warranty. PNY is an American company and they offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY on this sucker. It's easy to register on their site too. QUICK TIP FOR REGISTERING YOUR CARD: Do it before you put it in your case OR take a pic with your phone/write down the serial number on the actual back of the card. Also, if you run into problems while registering and it tells you that isn't a serial number or whatever- You have to put the letter "P" in front of the serial. This will register it.
Now- on to the review part.
I love this card. I upgraded from a Gigabyte 670GTX (with the OC cooling). That card was great and was super cool under a full load (hardly ever broke 65c). Now, I know some of you are snickering out there asking why I would upgrade from a 670GTX to a 780- even more so for 1080p gaming- yeah it's true. It's kind of a waste- but I wanted to be sure I could run AAA games for the next few years at max settings. My intention was to go SLI- but after doing the math and after selling my 670 I was able to get this card for about $60 more than it would have cost me to go SLI and get a better cooling solution.
Now onto the card itself- the first thing I noticed was temp. Temps reached up to 80c when gaming but this is normal with the default cooling profile and within it's use parameters. Nothing bad there- but still hotter than I would like. After tweaking a fan profile in MSI Afterburner- this thing stays in line and runs games like Planetside 2 at Ultra settings around 50-55c- which again, falls more in line with what I was used to with my 670 (again this may be unfair to compare because that thing had 3 fans and a custom cooling right). Yes the fan revs high/is louder and works harder but even so, it isn't even that loud. I don't even hear it because I wear headphones 97% of the time when gaming.
When I am not gaming, I can hardly hear the fan at idle.
The other thing that is great about this card is the construction quality- I have never felt a more sturdy graphics card- and it looks great. Just like a Titan. The card also lights up "GEFORCE GTX" in bright green on the top of it- so it looks even better inside the case if you have a clear side panel (in my opinion that is).
As of right now- this thing is the top of class, besides Titan. If you want the best, single card solution- go for this.
If you are trying to save some money- go SLI on some other card (670's would be a good deal).
Just be sure to understand the requirements and potential issues of SLI and have a plan for mitigating heat within the case.
Here is the only difference between this PNY card and the EVGA version:
Max Digital Resolution PNY: 2560X1600 (2K~)- per display
Max Digital Resolution EVGA: 4096x2160 (4K~)- per display
I use two 2560X1440 screens for production and game on only 1 and will probably never go 4K with my current PC while 4K displays are all above $3000 today. So, I have no problems with that, and 3GB of VRAM is not quite optimal for gaming on 4K. TITAN is more fit for 4K today with 6GB VRAM, but not so sure about its raw power 2 years from now when 4K becomes more mainstream.
The PCB board had liquid wash marks on it from the fabrication process, this is not present on the EVGA version. But it is causing no problems.
SURPRISINGLY, the PNY card does not suffer from capacitor singing or coil whine under load like the EVGA cards, which my EVGA 780s and Titans suffer from at work. Also, however again this minor detail does not seem to affect performance.
The PNY Warranty Registration is kind of crippled, I had to do a little research to find out that I have to add a "P" in front of my serial number for it to register. AND, the ONLY place you will find the serial number is on the back of the physical card, so make sure you take a picture of it or job it down before installing or you might have to go through a lot more trouble to see it again. PNY does offer a lifetime warranty once registered while EVGA offers only 3 years. BUT, I sure hope PNY's RMA process is not so whirled up like the registration process IF something is to happen to the card in the future.
This is an even minor detail, but the official retail box came with only a DVI-to-VGA adapter and a consumer rewritable CD with the drivers on it, like the ones you can find and buy at your local office supplies store... Nobody ever uses those CDs for NVidia cards anymore since the best way is to download the latest from NVidia's website. So again, no big deal. Either I got their prototype card or they just put this product together quick and dirty.
1st card I got, the fan was stuck at 100% and sounded like a jet engine on first boot. I tried everything and couldn't control the fan. Seems like this was not a common issue so I suspected that it was hardware related. Second card, doesn't sound like a jet engine on first boot. I'm thinking, this is a great sign. Start up Crysis 3, the video card starts rattling. It sounded like the ball bearing was loose and it make a very rough sound. Sent back to Amazon. Finally the 3rd card I got was perfect. Fan wasn't stuck at 100%, fan worked perfectly. I could control it with MSI afterburner, and now I have had it for about a month. It's everything I could want from a graphics card. Runs games at 2560X1600 very well. Highly recommend this card, I just think I got some from a bad batch.
