At the default fan configuration, the card can get very hot - during a 45 minute session of Far Cry 4 it hit up to 83c, although it didn't stay at that temp (it would average to the high 70's) - far too hot for my taste. With EVGA Precision X, I set an "aggressive" fan profile, and this helped keep temps into the mid 70's, but the fan was very audible. I don't blame the heating issue on the card, but due to the small form factor of the X51.
As far as the card itself, it runs great so far and is a definite upgrade from my GTX 660. For example, my GTX 660 1.5GB OEM card could run Far Cry 4 at 1920x1200 (my monitor's native resolution) with everything set to low and/or disabled. Even then it would stutter at times (I'm aware of the stuttering issues with this game). With this GTX 960, I can run it at the same resolution with everything set to high (shadows on Medium), Tree relief and fur enabled, AA off, Godrays off, and Ambient Occlusion set to SSAO - pretty decent for a mid-range card.
Games like Bioshock Infinite, Shadow of Mordor, Batman Arkham Asylum / City, Tomb Raider, etc. all run at maximum possible settings, flawlessly - these games don't push the temps as hard either (for whatever reason), staying in the mid 60--70c range.
On a side note, I just purchased these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IJ2J2K0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - the measurements of these fans will fit perfectly under the X51 (or on the side, if not sitting vertically). I plan to prop the X51 up a bit off the desk by letting it rest on two small raiser's (a book on both ends will work too) at the very front and back, just resting on the edges of the case, and then stick these two fans underneath (use velcro command strips or something). This should help with the cooling quite a bit, by blowing cooler air directly into the case, from under the graphics card.
Overall, a decent card. If upgrading from a GTX 660 or older, I would definitely recommend it (unless you can spend another $100+ to get the GTX 970).
UPDATE: I just used EVGA Precision X to overclock this card to 160+ settings (I left the mem-clock and voltage at the default zero setting), for a total of 1484mhz core clock. I also set the aggressive fan profile. I just played Far Cry 4 in 1080p, with everything on high (including AO and anti-aliasing on their minimum settings) with no artifacts! Plus, the temps stayed at or below 75c. I'll get those two 80mm fans Friday, so I'll report back if that helps th temps any. So far, a great card!
UPDATE #2: Just for my code for The Witcher 3 - fully registered with my gog.com account! Can't wait until May 19th to download and play!
Nice price point also. I couldn't spend 300 on a card but this can still easily play most games at max settings at 60 fps.
Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, GTA5, just to list some popular ones.
I would recommend to anybody buying a card for 4k gaming, you will need to get the 4GB version.
I did not need that so the 2GB is perfect for me.
It has a single 6 pin PCI connector and is very quiet.
Performance wise, this card doesn't offer much more power than my previous Nvidia 660, however, it does fit inside the 2011 Alienware x51.
Also, I've notes some severe, but rare stutters that may be from the card, or the current driver.
My personal recommendation, get this card if you have the 2011 model x51. However if you have a good sized case, dont waste the money on this adequate card.

Saludos.
