I was having a hard time finding a strong graphics card that wouldn't require me to add a stronger power pack to my computer... most reviews dealt with gaming performance and other traits that wouldn't have helped me out.
I'm operating with a Dell XPS 8700 desk top, which has a 460 watt power supply. I got on line with a Dell Support Technician and explained that I wanted a strong card that would go with my existing system, knowing that changing out the power pack would also void my Dell warranty.
The tech was very helpful and understanding that video rendering/editing and photo editing were my primary work flow considerations, he suggested the Nvidia Quadro K5200. I didn't purchase it through Amazon, as Dell sold it to me direct.
I'm comfortable with computer components, though I am not a computer geek by any stretch.
I uninstalled my existing card, removed the software and followed the installation procedure for the K5200 (comes with a disc)... I had no problems fitting the card and connecting all of the plugs... took less than 30 minutes, being very careful and deliberate so as not to miss a plug/connector.
This was a big leap, as the card I removed was what came with the system (Nvidia GeForce Gtx650 Ti)
I ran all of the updates and re-calibrated my display with the new card. ( I use Spyder 4 for cal).
My work flow is often very slow (in the past) when it comes to rendering effects in Adobe Premiere Pro cc. I also use Adobe Photoshop cc. When processing video segments, I do a lot of "warp stabilization", in the past, I would import the segment, edit it, group it with other segments, drag and drop warp stabilizer to the crouped segments, then go get coffee....
Well, I can still get coffee, BUT, the rendering is FAST... extremely fast. I didn't use a stop watch and as the other card is OUT, I can't see head to head, what the difference is. A video segment that used to take 40+ minutes to render, now renders in 10 minutes or less. The card is so quiet that I thought the fan may not be running, but it is (took the side cover off to check)..
I do a lot of batch processing with RAW and JPEG images in Photoshop... often 190 full size images at a time. This workflow is also now very quick and the computer doesn't work as hard, as the card is taking on most of the processing/rendering work.
I can't speak intelligently about cuda cores and other specs, but Adobe lists this card as one of their approved models.
I suddenly feel spoiled.. it's startlingly fast... when editing photos, no matter what the function, the results are immediate. Cloning, erasing, puppet morphing, warping, and all of the other functions that used to have a tiny lag, now happen so fast that I'm just plain stunned.
I'm not going to lie.. it's a lot of money, BUT, I'm getting my work done faster than ever before, so... I suppose, I "could" be taking on more work.
If you are producing video, editing large photos and making use of photoshop suite programs.... such as Premiere Pro and After Effects... get ready to move faster than every before, with NO sudden work stoppages. I used to have to stop at various stages to allow my computer to catch up with the editing demands, now it's "real time"...
If you're processing photos and doing video editing for a living, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this card to YOU. It actually draws less power than the wimpy card I pulled out... I don't understand how that is possible, but it's true.
Very efficient. Thank you Dell for recommending this card and thank you Adobe for having it on your approved list. Side note... Dell charges slightly more than amazon, I paid $ 1,899.00, so Amazon is slightly less expensive.
