My project was restoring some suspension parts for my '58 Chevy custom street rod. I'd purchased a set of control arms off Ebay. The seller stated clearly that these were not show quality but good strong driver quality parts. He was correct but under the painted surface was much pitting and corrosion. They'd been attached to some old clunker in a wrecking yard that, over the decades, had sunk into the ground. Once I got the paint off I realized that bead-blasting would not remove the pits.I determined that hand sanding the pieces down to clean smooth metal was my best strategy. While that worked well for most surfaces there were some places that were just too badly pitted to safely remove it all. With various shapes & sizes of wire brushes. grinding pads and air motors I knocked off all the rust I could get at and smoothed as many pits as possible. After a thorough degreasing I applied the metal prep spray which is a mild acid wash with zinc phosphate added. Air drying leaves the zinc film and a light flash rusting which is exactly what the POR-15 ceramic resin wants for a bonding catalyst. Application with a brush was simple and produced gorgeous gloss black results. The coating is self-leveling and filled completely all but the very worst spots on my control arms. The pieces were smooth as glass, Seriously! I only have one small regret: Further internet study revealed that the coating is UV-sensitive and doesn't hold its beauty under continuous exposure to the sun. They say it will start to get milky looking pretty quick. This is just a cosmetic issue, but I was so happy with the beautiful results I was going to leave the pieces just as they were.
Now, I'll wet sand them and cover with primer & paint.
The coating is super stout. In prepping and applying one side of my pieces I would get POR-15 on the other side and would have to get it removed. Wipe it off while the coating is still wet because once it cures for even 12 hours it is tough as porcelain. Don't get it on you either... you'll be wearing it for a good number of days. Here's a tip I discovered: The kits come with latex gloves. After you've finished an application take one of the gloves and stretch it over the can then push the lid on. It provides an effective seal and your expensive can of coating won't dry out or set up. Of course, when the can gets really low there is enough air inside to trigger the curing and you'll loose some no matter what you do.
This is a great product. Best I've ever seen. Follow the directions. :-)
It won't work if the rust is making holes. For that you will need at least the POR-15 patch POR-15 49013 Black POR Patch - 4 oz. and perhaps some body work with Bondo or even welded metal.
But if you catch the rust early in the process and it hasn't progressed too far, this will stop it in its tracks. It's a great product. Follow the directions. It sticks like mad and reopening a bottle will likely be impossible after first use. Prep the metal by sanding it well. Watch in applying the paint that you don't get it on your skin or anywhere else you don't want it because getting it off is nearly impossible.
20 years ago I would buy a product at auto stores that promised to convert the rust into stable, non-oxidizing paint. It was a milky, somewhat expensive liquid that turned the rust black. But it never seemed to work. This is the first paint I've used that really seems to work.
Aside from that, everything is wonderful. The marine clean and the metal ready work well, some reviews say they're not necessary, I think they very much are. Especially if you're doing exactly what POR-15's purpose is: painting over rust. I don't think the paint would have adhered very well if I just tried to brush all the metal flakes and dust off with my bare hand. The paint is pretty easy to work with too, it's thick and is easy to apply on bumpy rusty steel. Be very careful with it though! If you drop it, whatever it splashes is on black forever. It'll also be on your hands for days if you get any on yourself. The rubber gloves came for a reason, use them at all times. Take your time, do a good job. It will look great, and stop the rust from spreading where you're painted.

If you do the prep exactly like they say, this stuff forms a rock solid coating over the rust.
I will never use another product again.
