The cord came wrapped up real tight so I'll have to spend some time training it not to curl up since it seems to want to curl into the disc when I'm moving it/sitting it down. Kind of annoying but that'll go away before long.
The motor feels way stronger than my Bosch did but that's probably just cause this grinder is brand new and my Bosch had over a thousand hours of hard labor on it and I forgot what that thing was like out of the box.
One gripe everybody mentioned is the stupid guard. I love the quick release on the guard since you had to unscrew the guard on the Bosch, but I didn't need a bag of guards for each task back then. I could switch from rock to cutting disc and back to my rock without problems. I never had a need for different "types" of guards. And of course this one didn't come with the Type 1 you apparently need for a cutting disc.
So, this is what you do. The reason the Type 27 guard won't work for cutting discs is because it tapers at the top. Take the guard and lay it flat on a real sturdy table, grab you a hammer, and spend a few minutes tapping around the small hole where it connects. Do this till it's flat. Now put it back on and guess what, you got a Type 1 guard. Now I can switch between cutting and grinding wheels without rubbing. It ain't a big deal.
I like this grinder. Great tool for the moneys.
Anyway, I initially I was using air cutoff tool to cut my ceased front cv axle joint which has stuck and bonded to the hub. But, my air tank wasn't powerful enough to supply enough pressure for longer period of time. Air tool was doing its job, but, very slowly, due to lack of sustained air pressure.
So, I bought this electric angle grinder for hell of it.
And surprisingly, it is very powerful, yet lacks the "type 1 guard for cutting blades".
I made a search for the part listed on product detail section(type 1 cutting guard for this item), but, I couldn't find it in Amazon, I found it in other internet sellers.
So, I took a chance and decided to order Dewalt cutting guard from Amazon hoping it would fit, otherwise, return it,
Dewalt DC410/DC411 Grinder Replacement Guard (2 Pk) # 643772-00-2PK(***Dewalt DC410/DC411 Grinder Replacement Guard (2 Pk) # 643772-00-2PK***)
but, luckily, it was perfect fit. this type 1 guard fits like a glove to the porter grinder above.
In fact, I am very satisfied that this porter cable grinder was cutting faster than all of my air cutting saw and grinder.
If you want to use cut-off wheel, don't try it without the proper guard, just for the safety.
I am not here to advertise a product for a personal benefit or gain,
But, to let you know there is a type-1 guard out there that fits, in case, if you want to use this tool as cutting tool.
my cutoff wheel is all worn out in the pictures. I should've changed it before, it breaks off, and fly out. Another reason to use a guard.
As of this writing, it is miscategorized on Amazon as a grinder/cut-off. This product only comes with a grinder guard, no cut-off guard as shown in the Amazon images. Cut-off wheels will not fit with the grinder guard (even if they did, this would be potentially unsafe operation). That said, this is not the fault of Porter-Cable, simply misinformation on Amazon. Porter-Cable has another product (PC60TCTAG) which is identical to this grinder except for the model number and inclusion of a cut-off guard.
I was able to fit a Dewalt guard onto this grinder to keep the total cost down. I purchased a used Dewalt guard off of eBay for $8.99 shipped. Otherwise I would have to purchase the correct Porter Cable guard for $20+.
Before I received the Dewalt guard, I only utilized 1/4" (or thicker) grinding discs. I do own a Dewalt grinder that can use the cut-off discs, so it was not an all lost waiting game.
This grinder has a lot of speed and power. I used it to grind steel on my tow trailer project. The handle is really cheaply made. The threaded stud that is in this plastic handle was not set in there properly. So when spinning the handle on, it wobbles as it is threaded in. Pretty sad.
But it is worth noting that this grinder is really cheap. I paid $29.98 for this grinder, which came with Amazon Prime shipping all the way to Hawaii.
