Potable Aqua with PA+ Water Treatment Tablets
Used worldwide by campers, hikers, militaries, emergency organizations, and anyone else who needs to drink water of questionable quality, these Portable Aqua iodine tablets will disinfect contaminated drinking water in a pinch. The tablets--which are intended for short-term or limited emergency use only--make most water bacteriologically suitable for drinking, proving effective against Giardia lamblia when used as directed. Each Potable Aqua tablet contains 20 mg of Tetraglycine Hydroperiodide (TGHP), which liberates 8 mg of titratable iodine when released into water. Within 30 minutes, the iodine will have penetrated the cell walls of the microorganisms, rendering them inactive and making the water bacteriologically suitable to drink. Potable Aqua tablets also neutralize the iodine aftertaste and color, improving the taste of your drinking water.
PA Plus are neutralizing tablets for use after water has been treated with Potable Aqua. The PA Plus tablets neutralize the iodine after-taste and color in the water in just 3 minutes.
For use only when drinking water is of questionable quality. Is not for use on a continuous basis. Read the complete product label and follow all directions for use.

Reliable Backup and Compliment to Filters
In addition to being a great stand alone purification product, Potable Aqua's small size, low price, and reliability make it the ideal backup and compliment for any filter or purification device.
In cold temperatures filter membranes and mechanisms can rupture or break without your knowledge. Potable Aqua tablets are unaffected by freeze thaw.
Bacteriological Purity at point of use
Water purified at the source can be re-infected by the container it is transported in. Potable Aqua tablets, when used as directed, help protect against recontamination in the container so your water remains bacteriologically suitable to drink at the point of use.
Bring on outdoor adventures, traveling, or just be prepared at home
Perfect to use with outdoor activities
Whether camping, canoeing, hunting or engaging in any outdoor activity, it pays to be mindful of your water supply. All Potable Aqua water purification products are lightweight, take up very little space and when used correctly will protect you from a host of bacteria and parasites.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that between 30% and 70% of international travelers suffer some form of Traveler's Diarrhea (TD), calling TD 'the most predictable travel-related illness'. The most common causes of water-borne TD are bacteria, such as E. coli, cholera and salmonella, which are reduced or eliminated by Potable Aqua water purification products.
Be prepared for emergencies and disasters
As hurricanes and tsunamis tragically demonstrate, the first things to get knocked out by natural disasters are the electrical grid and the water supply. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) an adult needs a minimum of a half-gallon of water per day just for drinking. So a family of four would require roughly two gallons per day of purified water.
Do Potable Aqua tablets have an Expiration Date?
No, Potable Aqua is an EPA registered product that does not require an Expiration date. The Lot Number that appears on the side of each bottle represents the date of manufacture of that item, not the date of expiration.
The shelf life of Potable Aqua is dependent on storage conditions. Product should be stored in a cool, dry place, in adherence with the label’s storage guidelines to maximize product shelf life. When reviewing your product, as a general rule tablets that are grayish/brown in color are good and tablets that are yellowish/green should be replaced.
Bottles that have been opened should be replaced for the next season.

Without getting too much into basic chemistry, there are two methods for water purification tablets: Iodine and chlorine. Iodine is the arguably more effective method, but it leaves an iodine taste. It is suggested the taste may determine how much or how little one drinks. So, how do you deal with it? In this case, Potable Aqua includes a second bottle with tablets you can add to remove the taste, OR, simply adding vitamin C (i.e. Tang), or adding a pinch of salt per quart, adding flavorings (e.g., lemonade mix, etc.) or you can also pour it back and forth between containers (again, AFTER it has been adequately treated). The other option is chlorine, Chlorine should be used for persons with iodine allergies or restrictions like persons with thyroid problems, are on lithium, are allergic to shellfish (they may also be allergic to iodine), women over fifty and pregnant women should consult their physician prior to using iodine for purification. Be aware that iodine is light sensitive and must always be stored in a dark bottle, once opened, it may need to be used within a certain time.
The effectiveness of all chemical treatment of water is related to the temperature, pH level, and clarity of the water. Cloudy water often requires higher concentrations of chemical to disinfect. If the water is cloudy, strain it, add the tablets and swish it around. Splash some water with the chemical onto the lid and the threads of the water bottle so all water areas are treated. The water should sit for at least 30 minutes. The colder the water, the less effective the chemical, it works best if the water is over 68F/21C, if the water temperature is below 40F/4C, double the treatment time before drinking. Finally, iodine and chlorine will NOT work on toxic water (water that has dissolved chemicals or solids like salt). In that case, it MAY be safe/safer to add the use of absorbent filters (i.e. with charcoal), but the BEST advice is to simply NOT use toxic water!
I always say you should have at least TWO options for water, fire and shelter. Here, tablets are one, the other is a filter like Sawyer Products SP128 Mini Water Filter (It has the distinction of being able to be used almost perpetually by simply backwashing it!). But the best method is boiling, some say you don't actually have to "boil" water to make it safe, that by the time water actually comes to a boil it is already safe, but I like to see bubbles for my own peace of mind!
That said; I found these to be a good addition to an emergency kit in the event of a short term water emergency.
It is important to know the expiration date of the items in there. These pills in
particular as they are so important for emergency water from unknown sources.
so, when do they expire? I could find nothing on the bottles, and so I wrote to the company and received the
" The portable aqua tablets are good for 4 years unopened or 1 year once they are opened. You can find the manufactured date using the number on the label of the bottle as follows:
The last 2 digits are an internal batch number that can be ignored. The remaining 3-4 digits are the month and year that the tablets were made. For example, if the number on the bottle is 121034, the tablets were made in December of 2010. Again, they are good for 4 years unopened, and 1 year once they are opened"
I see no reason why this cannot be clearly stated on the label, or there is a separate batch number and clearly marked expiration date as there is on so many other items. Why make it a mystery?
****I just looked, my pills were marked 0914..and it is now 03/16, so my pills are good for ~ 2 1/2 years NOT 4! Be careful!!!!
My original review was one star..however, I just received the kind email below, so I will change my review to 2 stars and then higher if they
indeed change the label..but i still do not understand why it was not clearly marked in the first place:
Your feedback on Potable Aqua EXP dates is sincerely appreciated.
Your suggestion that printing the EXP date on the bottle rather than a LOT code would indeed help remove "mystery" about the shelf life of the product.
Although our current EXP process is EPA/FDA approved, there may still be room within EPA rules to make to make our EXP's easier to understand. That would amount to a win for our consumers and it oughta be a win for Potable Aqua too. Therefore today I have begun the process of evaluating and hopefully making the addition of the EXP dates per your suggestion.
Shelf life is calculated from the date the lot was manufactured. This assures the product is safe and effective for the specified shelf life of the product. Much like Doughnuts, if shelf life was calculated from date of purchase rather than date of manufacture, you wouldn't really know how fresh they are.
All pharmaceutical manufacturers are subject to the reality that time will have a negative effect on our products. Packaging, shipping, stocking, shipping to the consumer all take their toll on shelf life not to mention, as you point out, time on shelf must be considered too.
I can't remove time from the equation, no manufacturer can, but I will send a bottle to you out of appreciation for your suggestion.
Thanks so much for being a customer of Potable Aqua.
My best regards,
Director of Sales
I was very impressed with this product overall and will purchase more in the future for upcoming hikes!
