This book is a chapter-by-chapter analysis and documentation of the power of Israel via the Israeli, Jewish or Pro-Zionist Lobby on US Middle East policy. It raises serious questions as to the primary beneficiary of US policy, and its destructive results for the United States. The extraordinary extent of US political, economic, military and diplomatic support for the state of Israel is explored, along with the means whereby such support is generated and consolidated. Contending that Zionist power in America ensured unconditional US backing for Israeli colonization of Palestine and its massive uprooting of Palestinians, it views the interests of Israel rather than those of Big Oil as the primary cause of the disastrous US wars against Iraq and threats of war against Iran and Syria. It questions the inability in America to sustain or even formulate a discourse related to the subject of Israeli influence on the United States. It calls for a review of American Mid East policy with a view to reclaiming US independence of action based upon enlightened self-interest and progressive principles.

This book is highly documented and rigorously argued. The author has eminent standing in the progressive/left community, with long involvement in social justice struggles in Latin America. He is among the few American academics who enjoy an iconic status among progressives similar to that of Noam Chomsky. Petras challenges Noam Chomsky concerning his treatment and interpretation of Israel's influence in the U.S. This will spark a major debate among progressives, given the stature of both parties.

I agree with the consensus of the other reviewers about the usefulness of exposing the dangerous treachery of the neo-cons or, as the author puts it, the Zioncons, but what struck me most was the very simple, clear and absolutely irrefutable explanation for WHY the Middle East is so angry at the West, the Israelis, etc. The shameful, barbarous and criminal way they have been treated is barely referred to in the American media, and the Terror Experts, as the author calls them, have free rein to describe Arabs as non-people. The explanation of the Israelis' cynical manipulation of public opinion, as in the famous Danish cartoon, can be found nowhere else and is very, very eye-opening.

Petras' description of the state of the Zionist high-jacking of American Sovereignty, is sufficiently well documented as to avoid any hint of anti-semitism, although it has and will continue to be asserted by his detractors. I am grateful for his naming of some prominent Israel firsters. While well known for their efforts in provoking the USA into its invasion of Iraq, they retain their positions of authority and infuence. Individuals such as William Crystal and Charles krauthammer, continue to be just as influencial now in their treacherous drive toward the destruction of Iran. He presents his thesis with the same dedication as John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt in "The Israel Lobby", and has earned a similar Zionist reaction. It is ancient history that we were alerted to the dangers of International Bankers' control of our monetary system by Henry Ford, for which he has earned the rhetorical dismissal of Racist, and Anti-Semite. James Petras has brought history up to date, and confirms that there could have been no other outcome. While I have enjoyed the books written by pundits such as Pat Buchanan, James Petras offers a course for the recovery of American Sovereignty which is less clearly stated by so many others. The concept which I took from this book is that his solution lies in local and state level action.

GOOD, TRUE, BUT NEEDS MORE PROOF

Consider this a 4.5 star rating. This book is quite persuasive. Particularly in the chapter on Israel's 2006 assault on Lebanon, the author had me slowly nodding my head in lament. And he presents a good deal of research to back up the claims he makes. But that research is not adequate. To claim that the nation of Israel and the Jewish U.S. lobby were largely responsible for the war in Iraq, that the Jewish lobby in the U.S. is largely responsible for the ongoing subjugation of Lebanese, and the seemingly inevitable military strike on Iran, among other things, simply requires more proof. We need to see multiple quotes from members of the Israeli government or U.S. Jewish lobbyists, such as "The only way to protect the nation of Israel is to first strike those who may mean it harm." We need to see multiple statistics proving that the U.S. Congress does in fact support the subjugation of Lebanon more than the citizens of Israel do. A good example of THAT would be presenting a long, extensive table showing poll results, or financial donations from Jews to certain members of Congress that vote in Israel's interest. But those aren't here. When the author states things such as "Israel is waiting to see how the trial goes [before deciding who to back in a particular case]" he has got to provide some proof of it. But once again, that is not here.

This book is not anti conclusive, and certainly not anti-Semitic. No chance. It is simply too short. It's worth the money, though!

Does it in a scholarly way using typical elite power analysis. Certainly a topic people should be able to think and talk about in a rational way. Too many people afraid to and then when do say something stupid. Don't say something stupid, read this book.

This is a great read for anyone interested in exploring the depths of Zionist influence in American politics as well as other critical areas of American existence. Somewhat scary to realize how infiltrated our society is by this group and more importantly, how highly organized they are right in our midst.

Think it's about time someone with the intelligence, not to mention courage, of Petras is able to so fully expose this vein of activity. As usual, America has been asleep letting others take over its basic functions who place themselves in critical "push button" positions or, if you wish, positions of control. It's no wonder the Zionists are now asking for a "quiet" resolution of their differences with America in the wake of the recent awakening of Americans regarding the conflicts on the Gaza strip. Not to mention the Obama administration's somewhat negative attitude towards Israel to date. It's always been their way to operate in the shadows - creating hostilities [such as in Iraq] while red blooded Americans put their lives on the line.

Also, the Zionist shield of antisemitic accusations of those who oppose anything promoted by them is slowly evaporating as Americans become more alert to their ways. Let us hope it's not too late!

Anyone who reads this book will have their eyes opened as to what is meant by the phrase "ruling elite". The Zionists (and they are not all Jewish) now control the Council of Foreign Relations that group of elites that select our presidential candidates and many of our senators and congressmen. The American People have no choice in these matters. The CFR chooses most of the presdential cabinet as well as the top deputies in the departments of State, Defense and Justice. And worst oif all, the CFR/Zionists also direct the focus of our foreign policy that primarily directs America to support ISRAEL and Israel's defenses against Islam. Read this book and you will understand our flawed Middle East policy.
