These multi-purpose chisels are a solid addition to a set of turning tools, especially a beginner's set. The "versa chisel" shape--what Sorby calls a spindlemaster, and similar to the Crown skewchigouge--does allow fast wood removal like a gouge, albeit with a cleaner cut, and cuts beads like a skew chisel, but with less chance of a catch. Not zero chance--when you first start out with these, there'll be a little catch or two, but they're much more forgiving than a skew, especially for beginners. So, while they don't do anything unique, being able to turn quick tapers and smooth beads without changing tools is nice, and the lack of catching can be key, depending on how nervous you are with your skew.
The grind on these is a little rough, and the workmanship is the adequate-not-fancy typical of the Benjamin's Best line, but they keep an edge better than I expected: all in all, an excellent value for the price. The set is one "mini" size and one "midi" size chisel, both of which are good practical sizes in my hands.

As they come, these are honestly just so-so, or at least they were for me. I took a chance and put a steeper angle on them. I used a basic "flat" grind like you'd do with a typical roughing gouge, rolling it side to side on the grinder, and now they are fantastic. With the curved shape of the one side a fingernail grind didn't seem necessary. They can make beautifully "sharp" coves, more so than a skew, and much better than you can make with a spindle gouge. They are a little more catch-happy with the steeper angle, however, and need a light hand to avoid catches. They also easily go right from rounding out a blank to cutting details. They seem to cut very dense woods better than my gouges and stay sharper longer, and can be honed quite a few times with a few swipes of 220 grit sandpaper. They do, however, need to eventually be resharpened on the grinder. I'm not sure how anyone is having these last indefinitely just honing the flat side, but it's not working for me. I didn't take a star off for the grind because it's so easy to fix, and like I said, I think they do need to be reground occasionally anyway.

This is my second set of Versa Tools. I have EWT's and I love them but they are expensive so I like to have my less expensive tools to use more often. These are my go-to tools for turning. Sure, you need to sharpen more often but still I love them for the versatility (thus, the name versa) and they work for so many turning jobs.

After truing the bevel, these chisels work very well. I've not had a catch with them yet. The bevel is not polished like Scorby's Spindlemaster, but are of the same design. Very good value for the price!

I've played with tools a little, but so far have not found anything that jumps out and shouts "WOW" about it. It's an awful lot like using a skew (although a little less likely to catch than a skew). I will play with it some more and update when I think I have some good news. Information on using the tool and SHARPENING directions would have been very helpful!

These are very useful. I have turned about 5 bowls in my life and maybe 25 spindle projects--I'm still a beginner. These are definitely cheats, but they allow me to solve a lot of problems I wouldn't be able to otherwise. For example, they can nibble out at the inside of a bowl, making it smooth or shaping it more. If you have just a standard set of chisels, after a couple bowl gouges, two or three of these makes a lot of sense.

I can create a better finish with these than any of my other chisels, and I can solve more problems than I otherwise would be able to. On top of that, a 3 piece set of these is one of the cheapest ways to get three more useful lathe tools.

With product in hand, it appears to be well made and as advertised. I can't give it a full five stars however until I master how to use it. I will recommend it as a buy but I am not yet ready to brag on it yet.
