Editorial Reviews
Vinyl LP pressing. Darkside is the collaborative duo of critically acclaimed electronic artist Nicolas Jaar and guitarist/composer Dave Harrington. Darkside summon a hybrid of electronic music, psychedelic rock, and dance floor techno with the sort of artistic depth and breadth for which the term "progressive" was coined. Darkside's first full-length album released on Nico's own Other People label in conjunction with Matador Records is called Psychic. Darkside's Psychic is a watershed moment for the duo, a quantum leap forward from their 3-song debut, 2011's Darkside EP.

Like all good albums it's made up from a patchwork of influences that add up to something bright and new. Bits of Psychic are like Can's Future Days dissembled by XX or Young Marble Giants. The guitar parts float in from P-Funk's magnificent Maggot Brain while most of it is re-imagined `90s and `00s rock-tronica (think Underworld, Aphex Twin and Portishead rather than Moby or Norman Cook).
A few of the tracks can only really be described as odd (Greek Light and Sitra) but when the album gets going and back to the beat it really rocks. For me there's been nothing quite as interesting, musically, this year.
IMHO, Psychic and particularly the key tracks Golden Arrow, Paper Trails and Freak, Go Home are the latest entrants into the pantheon of space-rock. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is the obvious reference here and Psychic builds on that some 40 years later. While the mechanics, the instruments and the voices are different the album art and the fragmentation suggest space, disconnection and disorientation. Like Floyd, Darkside's sound scapes are either otherworldly and ethereal or homely, comfortable and numb. But, unlike Floyd, Psychic seems to offer closure and, through that, satisfaction and contentment. If all rock music is about release the perfect audience for this album are moon-miners, home exhausted but happy after a hard day scrabbling for meteors.
Listened to the entire CD in one sitting. Couldn't help but hear influences from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" & "Wish You Were Here" except maybe if Syd Barret had been at the creative helm before he became ill.
A lot of current experimental "find a sound" meandering I've heard of this music genre don't have much imagination and originality in their melody structure and choice of sounds whether natural or synthetic except this one. It does stand out. I'ld say Darkside's "Psychic" is on par with Mouse On Mars, another very creative group of similar experimental ambient electronic music, except "Psychic" being just a bit more spooky for lack of a better descriptor. It would fit right in played at a Halloween party.
There's a lot of attention to detail in each strange distortion to familiar sounds flowing in and out of the melodies such as a sampling and looping of a tail end flourish from one of Harrington's gorgeous sounding guitar licks that lingers very quietly like a distant siren in the background. Just beautiful. This album made me want to pay attention what was to come next. That's a sign of well crafted music.

Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of can't be botheredness in the artwork,no booklet, just a hard piece of card for the cover.
5 star's are for the music...
What the hell for the packaging.
