Describe your product in 3 words.
Stylish. Fun. Simple.
Where did you get the inspiration for your product?
The single-speed PUBLIC C1 step-thru frame bike is inspired by trips to Europe, and in particular, visits to Amsterdam where the curved, open, step-thru bike frame design is commonly seen. The PUBLIC C1 is ideally suited for trips around town, casual riding with friends and weekend jaunts through the park.
What differentiates your product from similar products out there?
The PUBLIC C1 is built with a high quality, durable steel frame and comes complete with matching fenders, chain guard, and painted rims. Front and rear rack mounts are also standard, ensuring you will always be able to carry your much-needed items if you add an optional rear rack. Unlike many other single-speed bikes, our single-speed PUBLIC bike allows you to coast and relax while riding, while also using powerful dual pivot brakes and alloy rims to ensure great stopping power rain or shine.
Tell us about the best and most challenging parts of the creation process.
We worked hard to make sure the C1 includes the best features of our most popular PUBLIC bikes at our most affordable price, including strong dual pivot brakes, puncture-resistant cream tires, matching fenders, chainguard, and rims, and elegant step-through frame with a lifetime guarantee. It was a challenge selecting the perfect gear to make cruising easy on flat and moderately hilly streets, but we're thrilled that so many happy customers tell us they love the PUBLIC C1.

I soon hit a roadblock because the damage to the front fork was preventing the front wheel axle from slipping into the fork dropouts. I called Public and the call was picked up within 3 rings and was impressed with them acknowledging that there is a known issue with bikes being purchased from Amazon exhibiting this damage. (If you open the box and there is black plastic shards in the box it is likely your front fork is damaged) The Technician said that he would ship off a new fork after I send him an email with my contact information. I received confirmation 2 days later the fork was being sent ground UPS from California. It arrived 10 days later after the initial call. I immediately swapped out forks and was able to install the wheel. Yeah !!! Unfortunately this is where I really have an issue with Public Bikes.
When I flipped the bike over to assemble the new fork I notice MADE IN CHINA sticker on the bottom frame. When I researched the Public Bike website it states in the FAQ - "where are your bikes made?" see -[...] It ates that 93% of the bikes are made in China and 6% are made in Taiwan then states in the next sentence "We are proud to be among the handful of quality bike companies working with the some of the best bike builders in the world in Taiwan." This is misleading and deceptive advertising or if they claim that the bikes they are selling on their website are made in Taiwan than the bikes being sold on Amazon are inferior and Made in China. Which one is it? see the attached pictures.
The issues don't stop with the fork replacement. After replacing the fork I followed the instructions for "Front Brake/Fender installation" and I ran into the next issue and where I am now confirming my suspicions this is an inferior product. The instructions and brake assembly look nothing like what I received on my Amazon bike. The brake assembly in the manual looks of higher quality. The installation manual [...]Assemble front brake and fender by sliding brake mounting bolt with large smooth spacer thru the upper fender mount. Install serrated washer, and slide thru fork front brake mounting hole(Figure 7). The problem is there is no serrated washer nor there is serration on the fork. Instead they give you 2 contoured spacers that do not work because the you cannot tighten appropriately regardless of how much I tighten the the with the Allen wrench. This issue is similar to what others have described in having difficult with.
I will call Public again and ask them to explain the differences in the product and documentation. I am confident they will will resolve this issue because their support has been responsive so far.
I have to say as a child, I wrecked my bike in far worse ways and my bike NEVER looked like this. Must be that made in China quality. We thought this was quality at the price it is, but I guess our money was wasted.
