We got this pitcher for our family of 6 almost 3 years ago, and have used it constantly since. It does fit nicely in a fridge, but we keep it on the counter because it gets used so often and I don't like the fridge door opening all the time. We have a smaller Brita pitcher for the fridge, and there is a HUGE difference in the taste. The Pur is much better. We live in NYC, which has heavily chlorinated water. With this Pur filter, we can't taste the chlorine at all.

We have found that after a couple of weeks (sometimes less) the filters really slow down. At first we'd just replace them, because even with replacing the filter every couple of weeks it's cheaper to filter water than to buy it pre-bottled. (My daughter just did a science project on the fact that bottled water is almost completely unregulated, so filtering your own tested/regulated tap water is probably safer anyway.) However, we have since discovered that if you pull the filter out and soak it in cold water for 10 minutes, the same as you do when starting a new filter, the drip speed increases again. Now our filters really last the month or two they're supposed to.

I have never had a problem with mold or mildew with this dispenser, a problem that some people have with Britas. I wash it every once in a while when I see dust in the top part, but I'm really amazed at how clean and fresh it has stayed all these years. It is really convenient to use though it's a little heavy to return to the fridge once it's filled (another reason ours stays on the counter).

I'm on this page now just because our dispenser has (finally) started to leak from the spout. There aren't many products that can be used heavily for 3 years without a single problem! So after I finish this review, I'm going to buy another one. I don't know of any better, safer, cheaper, more delicious way to keep a large family hydrated.

Great water filter and pitcher. Durable and stylish.

Update 10/24/12: Still working amazingly well. Just pop it in the dishwasher every time I change the filter and its good as new.

I was between this and the Brita 18 cup dispenser. I've used a Brita pitcher for 10 years and been happy with it. Couldn't find any conclusive reviews saying why one's better than the other. Since I had a year's supply of Brita filters already, I went with the Brita. Brita leaked out of the box. Also, spout on the Brita is raised off the bottom! You can't get all the water out, even if you tilt it! Now I can see how some people have found algae in the bottoms of their Britas. So, I returned it and got this Pur. After using both, I can say the build quality on the PUR is superior! More thoughtful and sturdy. PUR is much easier to clean inside, unlike the sharp corners inside the Brita. HUGE PUR PLUS, the pour spout puts out twice as much water as Brita! Pouring with the Brita spout was painfully slow! After using the PUR, my wife and I both love the PUR! Happily left behind our years supply of Brita filters (lost money!) for the better, PUR!

I felt the need to switch from 2 five gallon jugs with the cold/hot dispenser to the PUR 18 cup dispenser, because:

1) I got really tired of lugging/schlepping/dragging 2 of those to the machine at least twice a month

2) Call me crazy but I did not trust the keeper of the machines to properly care for the machines, at least with the PUR dispenser I know I will care for it and change the filter

3) I would at times run out of water in those jugs and then be forced to use bottled water (which I only have in the house as backup) and then be running out after dark to have those jugs refilled, and that probably wasn't the best idea when it comes to safety.

One thing I will miss about the jugs and the dispenser, is that it had hot water along with cold, but the amount of times I would use the hot water does not make me regret making the switch to the PUR Dispenser.

I have notices that it lasts a good while in my fridge, and filters A LOT quicker than I expected. The taste is very good and a total change from my Long Beach, CA spigot water. It takes up virtually no room up in my fridge, which is nice, and is very easy to fill. The handle feels very sturdy and even has some quick snap back, so be careful but it will flip up very quickly!

I would say that if you are looking for a new solution to clean, fresh water, and you drink a good amount of water, or use a good amount for cooking, look no further because this is the product for you. I have told a few friends about this product and they are interested and I know one is going to end up getting it.

doesn't work as expected. Initially it worked fine, but after few days (within first 10 days) we noticed some brown residue in the water settled on the dispenser floor. Considering it as one-off case, we cleaned it up and re-filled.

By around 3rd week, the filter stopped passing the water, took it out and dipped in glass of water for half an hour. It started operating again.

Now once again today we noticed brown residue settled at the bottom. Decided to return it, but unfortunately missed the return date by 2 days. Very confused whether to discard it or go for new filter. What if replacement filter works the same or worse?
