Pulls from many Japanese works by noted scholars that have not been translated into English before.

A good addition to my world war 2 library!

I havent often encountered such critical analysis of the Imperial Japanese War Machine from Japanese themselves. This one really does a great job of giving a more insider view on the brutality and chaos that was rampant during the period. Highly recommended for anyone looking to round out their views on the Pacific Theater.

Great book written without prejudice

This well-detailed first person account of the descent of Japan into fanaticism and fascism by an overbearing military, a willing leadership (including its emperor) and a subservient populace tainted by decades of Bushido, should be read by all Americans interested in ww2.
His description of the changes in the Japanese education system is particularly fascinating and unique, given his perspective as a student.
His analyses, especially relating to the bomb, tend to be stained with veiled hostility toward the US-which is humorous considering the arrogance Japan displayed on Dec.7,1941.

This book give a totally new take on the US in WW II.
The information on Japan following the surrender and the way General Douglas MacArthur managed Japan is very interesting and a disgrace to the United States.
I had never heard of crimes committed by US troops during the occupation of Japan.

I found this book to be a self serving Japanese attempt to somehow rationalize their actions during WW2. Amazingly the Rape of Nanking and the brutal treatment of the Allied POWs and civilians was downplayed, much to my dismay. I would someday like to read a Japanese author actually fess up and "tell it like it was" and not blame what they did on the West.

Ienaga was castigated for writing this book. It's one of the few Japanese books to be honest about their actions during the Pacific War. Highly recommended. I use it in my history classes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning lesson, apparently already forgotten
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2020
An astonishing commentary, by a Japaneseauthor, of the behaviour of Japanese military that invited their participation in WW2. Sadly, looking around the world today, the patent indictment of the 'ruling class' of Japan...a country I have, over the years, come to love as respect, under other circumstances.
Sadly, so many dramatic re enactments all too apparent in a world of China, USA, and a resurrecting USSR...with UK and Australia passive supporters, in so may parts of the world, for not disimilar motives that led to this awful and savage episode in History.

5.0 out of 5 stars Opinión honesta sobre la participación de Japón en la segunda guerra.
Reviewed in Mexico on May 5, 2018

5.0 out of 5 stars WWII as seen by a Japanese man
Reviewed in Japan on August 5, 2015
I was interested in a Japanese take on the events of WWII. Living in rural Japan, I have encountered the viewpoint that "Japan was not bad", "Japan was forced into the war", etc, etc. This book kills those viewpoints. This is WWII history, basically as I learned it in high school in the US. So you get colloboration of the US version, by a Japanese man who lived through the war. HIghly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Empirical
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2017
Notes 1) Translation or author's writing occasionally unclear. 2) Inevitably writer's voice can present info' 'perhaps' in a challenging/biased manner, or 'perhaps' that is the reader's bias. 3) Chapters 8 (partic' impact on specific invaded countries), 9 (TRULY 'The Horrors of War'), 10 (' Dissent and Resistance..... 'not much) and 11 (Defeat) are absorbing. However, partic' regard to resistance, greater analysis & info' of the cultural, psychological & societal impact on the mass of the population (non-politicians/military supreme command) would have been welcome.4) Behaviour of the US occupying force unsettling! 5)The concept of a "jushin", group of former premiers (official/unofficial?) working behind the scenes & thro' the Emperor interesting. 6) Further details of the position, role of, involvement in the decision making process, & attitude toward the Japanese people of and by the EMPEROR would have been illuminating.
