NUMBER OF PLEATS. The number of pleats (folds) is much less than what is shown in the picture. This is important because the higher number of pleats means that it filters more air. Of course the manufacturer prefers lesser pleats because that means less material so less cost. The number of pleats that I recieved was 13. The number of pleats shown in the picture is 19.
QUALITY. This filter contains baking soda and carbon. Other filters on Amazon do not, so this is a huge bonus, especially when this filter is so much cheaper than everything else.
AIR FLOW. The only other major problem that I can foresee is air flow. Despite the lesser pleats, this filter is pretty thick due to the carbon and baking soda. Comparing this air filter with another brand, the air flow from the air conditioning vents seems less but sufficient.
FIT. I had made a previous post which stated that one of the filters did not fit my Rav4. I found out that the error was on my car's part. I found out that no filters fits well with this car. The shape of the car's compartment is crooked. On the other hand, I did find small variations in the filter's dimensions. The measurements vary by an 1/8 of an inch. That's sort of a big deal since that means these filters are not a complete seal as air will flow through the hole of least resistance.
CONCLUSION. The number of pleats is slightly important to me but it isn't enough to deter me to purchase a more expensive filter. I'd rather just buy filters more often since all filters get dirty pretty quick due to the outside air (depending upon where you live).
I suggest you buy this filter due to the pretty awesome price of $9. It still has charcoal in it so I bet you that it filters just as well as the OEM and other filters. And you really can't beat the price. Just make sure you switch it out every 6 months.

Be aware: The stock Toyota filter has an arrow that points to "top". While this filter has an arrow that points in the direction of airflow, which is the opposite direction.
The instructions on the box were not for a Toyota Rav 4. However a simple search on goggle found the right video. The replacement could not be easier. Just open the glovebox and press in a plastic tab to unhook a piston on the bottom right. Then press the tabs in for the top left and right sides to drop the glovebox lid down.
Afterwards simply pull out the air filter cover from the right and pull the air filter out. I’m so glad I did this because my old filter was utterly disgusting. There were old leaves and dust covering the entire thing and I couldn’t believe I was breathing all that in. To replace just follow the reverse instructions.
The only confusing thing was that for my original Toyota filter there was an arrow showing top and bottom for orientation. These filters the arrows show the direction of airflow which happens to be opposite of the oreienration arrows. Took a minute to figure out from the direction of the debris that the air went from top to bottom so the filter arrows should point down. Minor issue but considering these are not OEM I’m fine with it.
I’m totally glad I changed my filters. My precious filters were literally disgusting and horribly dirty. I can literally breathe easier now.

A tip: Take a piece of tape and write the date of install and mileage and stick to the plastic filter cover inside the globe box. Makes it easy to check the last time you installed a new one.
It seems to be carbon impregnated but this is more of a marketing gimmick, in my opinion. If it is indeed activated charcoal, it will have adsorbed all the odors it can in a few days, just by sitting there. I would not pay extra for this "feature". To minimize odors, I turn off my A/C a few minutes before reaching my destination to allow any condensed moisture to be blown out by the fan at its highest setting. I removed a cabin filter from my 2001 Jetta and it was packed with crud, including hood sound-deadening insulation that some rodent used to make a nest on top of the filter. The creature had also chewed the tops of the filter pleats.
This filter seemed a perfect replacement and was the cheapest also. I would buy it again.
