First, let me say, that although it appears black in the photo - it is most definitely not black. More like a medium charcoal gray. Not a bad thing, but you should know this up front.
This pack has well-padded shoulder straps, making it comfortable even when loaded with a lot of weight. There are two compartments, each with separate zipper closures - a large main compartment, and a front smaller one. the large main compartment has a built-in padded sleeve to hold your laptop, as well as a few pockets, one which is great for placing your credit cards, as it has RFID-blocking technology to prevent those credit card info stealing people! Very handy when traveling!
The front pocket has several additional pockets inside, and is great for easy access to items like passport, electronics or reading material.
I really like the anti-theft features, and use them regularly, which for me, makes this the perfect "around town" bag, whether I am traveling abroad, or just doing errands close to home. I especially appreciate the additional security feature of the shoulder strap that detaches for wrapping around a table leg at a restaurant, then reattaches, allowing you to focus on your meal instead of worrying if someone is going to steal your pack.
Side pockets are handy for your water bottle and umbrella.
As an example of what it can hold, I normally carry this as a quick overnight bag, and can easily fit my laptop, assorted electronics, a change of clothes, an iPad and a light jacket inside of it.
It comfortably fits a water bottle and umbrella in the exterior pockets.
In the front pocket I put my personal hygiene items: glasses, sunglasses, extra contacts and solution, chapstick, sunscreen, toilet paper/tissue (a must for Asia), bug spray, hand sanitzer, my Tide To-Go stick, paw paw ointment, toothbrush/floss/toothpaste, a comb and dry soap sheets.IE ANYTHING you'd need during the day. (Some of these I will instead carry in my purse, see below, but they DO fit in this pocket).
In the big pocket I carry my DSLR in an oversized camera cozy. An extra lens in an oversized camera cozy. A pashmina scarf (you never know when you'll need coverage from the sun, the cold or for entering holy places). My iPod touch (does the same things as an iPad only they're smaller and lighter). Headphones. A Moleskine and 2 pens. And there's room for my jacket, snacks and souvenirs!
I carry a Travelon Anti-Theft Signature Slim Pouch along with this pack. It keeps my passport, ID, money, etc. securely on my front left hip. I left a review for those too. To me these two items go hand in hand and I can't imagine traveling without them!
One of the most important features of this backpack, the Slashguard, only protects the front pocket. As mentioned by quite a few others, top of the backpack can be slashed and thieves can take from the top. I'm guessing that Pacsafe designers are probably quite tall, so thieves can't slash from the top and side for them. Unfortunately for short people like me, thieves love to slash our bags from the top and side and take away the valuables. If there's any way to improve this bag, Pacsafe could add the Slashguard feature to both the top and sides of the bag so that big valuable items in the main pocket could be protected as well (e.g. tablet and laptop which won't fit into the smaller front pocket).
