Pros: Nice size. Haven't burned a crepe yet! (but don't set the heat higher than 3) Easy clean-up, easy to use. Price was okay.Love the spatula included.
Cons: Recipe book is limited. Spreader isn't wide enough. Triangular batter tool doesn't work well and makes crepe too thick.
Would love to have a professional crepe maker but this one certainly does the job well for home use. Crepes cook uniformly and quickly. Would buy it again.
-don't use that plastic spinner tool to spread the crepe; it's worthless. It makes a mess and the batter doesn't spread easily
-lower the heat instead of the 5 setting
-go free hand; agree with the recommendation to use a wooden spreader; I dropped a dollop of the batter in the spreader and used the T-shaped wooden tool; it works
-the Birchwood roller spreader recommended here at Amazon is $25 for a piece of wood. I guess if you make crepes for guests or family every weekend it may be worth the investment; the wood tools supplied work fine although require a little more practice and maybe your crepes will be a little less round
-don't forget to buy Buckwheat flour before starting up.
ADD (3/29/2014): Uploaded a video of my 10 year old daughter making her own crepe with the supplied wooden spreader and flipping too. No need for a $25 wooden dowel. This works great...our second weekend of making them. With practice yours will be rounder and larger.
When I was cleaning up after the first use, I noticed a rough spot on the edge and thought it might be stuck on food. My non-scratch cleaning cloth did not remove it, that's when I noticed it's a defect. It seems like the metal under the non-stick coating got "ruffed-up"a little before it was coated. And since the surface is not smooth, like the rest of the edge, I'm afraid the non-stick coating might not stay attached as well.
So, I contacted the manufacturer, and this was their response:
"I understand your worries but there is nothing wrong with that, probably more than half of these unit would have these kind of thing and never produced any problem with the heating or anything else so I would suggest you to use it and if there is something wrong happening let us know and we’ll see what we could do.
Have a nice day!
Personally, when I spend over $100 on an appliance, I expect it to have no defects. I decided to keep it and see how it goes, not feeling good about this purchase though.
Very well loved appliance in our home highly recommend
1. Buy a French crepe maker
2. Buy a French crepe spatula
3. Buy a French crepe spreader
4. Wear a beret while making crepes
SO all's I can say is that - 2,3,4 worked out great
1. did not. Let me elude -
This is a very well designed and constructed crepe maker and I had every wish that it would have worked for me. It apparently has worked for many other people.
I use this recipe (4 - 5 medium size crepes) :
1/2 cup mixed grain flour
1 cup 2% milk
1/4 cup EVOO
Blend well / rest the batter for 30 min and start your crepes. Tried the mix in the kitchen on my regular flat pan / gas cooktop / low heat - NO problem - almost perfect crepe - light / fluffy / visually the exact color of light brown I was looking for -
COOL - Lets move to the deck and use the Krampouz Tibos outdoors.
Even at the lowest setting (1, 1.5, 2) on this machine the crepes would come out dark brown / semi burnt on the bottom while the top was still sticky and uncooked. As an engineer by profession, this tells me that the heat is too high, even at the 1 mark.
What I suspect is the case is that the unit is designed and made in France (220V) somehow the changes they made to make it work in USA (110V) didn't do so well - why would even a 1 setting be burning the crepe ?
I'm going to get a replacement and try another unit to see if it was just mine but there you have it.
thanks for reading and good luck
This is the second crepe maker I have tried. The first was the CucinaPro CucinaPro 1448 12 Inch Griddle & Crepe Maker and that one lasted 5 minutes before ceasing to work. That one had uniform heat distribution but worse build quality. If anyone has a recommendation for a crepe maker that has decent build quality and uniform heat distribution, please let me know.
