I was anything but bored. I found the story compelling and the characters engaging. I thought the author did a particularly good job of addressing the aftermath of physical assault in a way that didn’t make the heroine sound like a simpering coward. Nor did I think it went to far for the average youth audience. It’s not a story I would have had a problem with my 13-year-old daughter reading.
The only drawback of the story was that the main characters complained a bit much about religious intolerance and then went on to express her opinions (to herself) in a way that seemed a little intolerant. But then characters can’t and shouldn’t be perfect so one can only hope she grows out of it.
After The Incident in high school, Nora closed off her heart. She's studied hard at school to become a nurse, fending off the advances of any and all males looking her way. The rape made her question the intentions of all men. Until she meets Clayton in a dream of the past.
Clayton claims to be her soul mate, separated from her across centuries. He needs her help, medically, and that need was urgent enough to call her to him. Except, they're still split in time, and Nora's finding all along that she might have been a little hasty in judging all men by those jerks from high school.
This book deals with some heavy topics, including rape. It's such a prevalent theme that its implications and consequences fill every page. Nora is healing, mostly, but she's still got some harsh judgements.
The fact this story is a mixture of genres will make the book appeal to a wide audience, especially as it is well written and the characters well developed.
