Caught between multiple forces, Chance soon discovers that his only hope may be the missing Maxilla.

This second book in the series is a fair read but in conjunction with the others of the series should be seen as a foundational piece of the overall story line. As a stand alone I would give it a 4 star rating but seen as a whole the book is certainly a 5

I HIGHLY suggest a nice long read of the whole series sequentially. It is well worth the effort and I believe the author has both a unique story to tell and a very strong set of characters that you will enjoy.

I usually don't like books with teens in high school environments, they usually revolve solely around the high school and numerous lame cliques such as Goths, cheerleaders, and jocks who pick on nerds. And rarely do the books involve scenes outside of the high school. This storyline is a refreshing change of pace, with a tougher than nails teen named Chance, with a wise cracking mouth, but the author doesn't bombard you with wisecracking jokes from Chance every other page, it's usually comes out when he's angry. The author does a great job of adding plenty of scenes, like the Veil where the shady non-humans dwell, police precincts, backwood shacks, wizard towers and plenty of other environments. The only problem I have is with the jocks beating up weaklings, as if most high school football players just walk around shoving kids. Usually football players don't cause trouble and they walk a straight line because they don't want to do anything to prevent them from performing under those Friday night lights in front of their adoring fans. I also find it hard to believe a kid with Chance's reputation would be getting pushed around physically, and bullying in high school is usually mental not physical. A brute pushing a frail kid around and yelling loser is so cliche in most of these teen novels and so unrealistic. Besides that minor issue, I have enjoyed this series, which has me salivating for the third installment

Although I am a prolific reader, the number of book reviews I write is few and far between. This series and this second book in particular in the series is an incredible read which I highly recommend to anyone who loves a dark (but humorous) urban fantasy.

If you ever wondered what a 15 year old Harry Dresden might have been like then look no further than Chance Fortunato.

Also, I'd like to call out the deep level of character development of Chance through these two books. I truly felt like I was with him every step of the way. I laughed at his snarky 15 year old thoughts and replies and was in literal tears along with him while reading one particular scene between him and his mother in this second book.

Thank you Mr. Reeder for sharing Chance's story with us, I look forward to reading as many books about Chance as you'll write for us!

These were some of the easiest Five Stars I've given to a book in a long time. :)

Rousing adventure story

This story succeeds on several levels. To start with, we have an extraordinary hero. A Romany child sold as a slave to a demon lord who manages to break free after years of abuse.
We have an interesting group of friends surrounding him to aid in his adventures, as well as a wise mentor to guide, teach, and protect him from a overzealous council of wizards who are only too ready to kill him.
Finally, we have an exciting story line to hold our interest, including one of the best car chases I have ever read. It's pretty easy to write a car chase into a movie, where the viewer can easily see the action, but, in a book, the action takes place in the readers imagination. It takes a skilled writer to make the action come alive. Ben Reeder does a great job, both in the car chase and the ensuing battle in the vampire night club.
The real test of a good author is his ability to tell an interesting story. In this book, Ben Reeder passed that test with flying colors.

I bought all four books together so if you see this same review for each, please forgive! But honestly, this book was a lot of fun to read. Great character to follow, right from the start. Chance Fortunato is simultaneously tough yet fragile, funny but sensitive, determined but still prone to self-doubt. Basically, he's a great portrayal of a teen who is figuring out how to move forward in life, despite some serious trauma. Oh yeah, and don't forget the distracting effects of hormones on a teen boy. How it plays out to serve the storyline, from its impact on his relationships to how it drives his choices is really well done. There might be a little over-reliance on where people fall out on the character spectrum (outsiders/goths = good, elitist conformists = bad), but the mystery-solving and overall narrative makes up for it. From a fantasy perspective, the magic system and how it's brought to life is well done, and shows a great awareness of global traditions. Ultimately, I'd call this a page turner, and I really, really look forward to the next installment.

The first one in the series (Demon's Apprentice) was great; this one's even better. Some loose threads are tied up. Good, subtle character development. Very believable 16-year-old protagonist, given his experiences and background. Real losses balanced by great gains. Although there is a full and frank acknowledgement of darkness, good and light tend to triumph, sometimes overwhelmingly. Funny in spots. Some interesting esoteric details, for ex., the discussion of the akashic plane. This book is a terrific read that gives you a lot more than "empty brain calories". Leaves you feeling satisfied, and not just "I've successfully entertained myself for x minutes."

Started a bit slower than the first one but has the same appeal. Normally in these para-normal thrillers you have a nice guy who wants to be a badass. In this set you have a badass who would have loved the white picket fence upbringing, if he could have chosen it. All the usual fun action and characters, with a hint of sweetness and morality you don't expect but really works. I would say this series is geared for High School. But I am long from there and enjoyed both books.

With page of swords Ben Reeder has given us an excellent follow up to the demon’s apprentice. This takes place 6 months after the end of the first book and Chance is now a somewhat secret apprentice wizard. He’s still in hiding from the wizards council who would kill him as a warlock if they found him so he’s reluctant to make himself stand out. When asked to help find a missing girl who has been put under a spell he has no idea about the world of trouble he’s about to land his friends and himself in.

These books are a little bit predictable in the sense that Chance is a teenage wizard who is still at school learning magic. Having said that though Chance’s dark and tragic background have aged him in many ways beyond his years and make him a character with depth. Book three in this series looks like its heading into Harry Potter territory, but despite that I’ll pick book 3 up as soon as it is available. Despite the somewhat clichéd youngster-gets-magic-and-goes-to-school story lines these books are both well written and very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
