Only to have the librarian's life go completely off the rails, into a realm where she has been claimed as queen by a foreign island king. Where yes, she has some reason to use her brains, but where her previous life and previous allegiances are completely swept away as if they were nothing.
I loved the first book in this series (Mark of the Tala), and the overall plot arc is really interesting and has a lot of potential. But I was sorry -- and this is from my point of view -- to see increasing instances of "woman has cosmically fantastic sex with man once, falls madly in love" followed by her life undergoing radical change as a result. This particular book is the most extreme case.
Falling in love is of course a major experience for anyone, and it can indeed be life-changing. But I did not like the complete derailing of what I thought was a very promising character to begin with. I value intellect and heart and courage and I don't like plots where discovering a sexual relationship is THE major plot pivot.
I'll give the author the benefit of the doubt and hope that the future books in this series give more opportunities for Dafne to use her powerful gifts of intellect to do what no one else can do.
Belated NOTE: This series does contain explicit sex, if anyone's deciding whether to read it.
As she has before, Jeffe Kennedy calls on the tropes and images from fairy tales, folklore, and other stories, then pushes them one step further, to some place new. You won’t believe what she does with a virgin sacrifice to still a volcano!
That said, it is still a good book that is a stand alone novel with a HEA ending (a must have for me). I do recommend reading these books in order since a few plot points of past books were revealed.
Bottom line, it was a light read or "page filler" (pun intended) in a magical series. Since it was a good, not great, book I gave it 3 stars.
Other books: Based on the two heroes bonding over a game it reminded me a bit of Assassin's Gambit by Amy Raby.
