Amazon.com Review

PBS painting star Jerry Yarnell follows the success of his beginner's lessons in Painting Basics with intermediate painting projects in Painting Inspirations. Yarnell reviews some basic terms and techniques; presents his materials list (as in volume one, he uses a limited but effective palette); explains glazing, an important skill for acrylic artists; and speaks to his mixing technique. The bulk of the book contains 10 complete paintings presented in Yarnell's popular step-by-step method. The compositions feature several landscapes in predominantly cool tones, such as a squirrel perched on a gnarled tree in a purplish, fantastic winter storm; a lonesome fence jutting across a cloudy lavender sky and soft green foliage after a rain; and a solitary lighthouse emitting a hazy beacon of yellow light against the deep blues of a crashing ocean and evening sky. Some of the techniques Yarnell explores include back lighting, the use of negative space, monochromatic effects, and discovering the exhilaration of fearlessly employing pure color. As usual, Yarnell intersperses his straightforward instructions with friendly advice: "You will want to do some experimenting with both brushes and different consistencies of paint. Each of us handles this kind of detail work very differently. The secret, however, is the consistency of the paint and the pressure applied to the brush." --Mary Ribesky

This book is by far the best art book I've owned as far as the very detailed step by step instructions it gives for each painting right down to the colours to mix and the brushes to use. Highly recommended.

This is one of my favorite instruction books. I love sunsets. Can't quite figure why anyone would trash it like one of the other reviews on this book. Personally I think I need Gods help to achieve a likeness of anything I paint. I'm not a "natural" and I can't remember key mixes for colors so I rely on books like Jerry's to give me bought talent. I don't expect a book to make me a artist by any means. I'm fascinated by anything I do that has a semblance to Jerry's work. I think I'm ahead of the game.

This book not only demonstrates how to set up and paint pictures, but explains the reasons for the actions. Give a person a fish, and he/she will eat for today. Teach a person how to fish, and he/she will eat for the rest of his/her life.

This was one of my first real art books I purchased after all my Walter Foster instructional books, which I love and will always treasure..(I still have quite a few of them). I did two paintings from Jerry Yarnell's book..only I painted them on plates...not on canvas. I started off painting on glass...then went to bowls and plates..now I paint on canvas. I did a Swan scene by the water from Jerry's book..called "PAINTING LIGHT". on porcelain with acrylic and baked the paint on, and then I did a Country scene at sunset on a plate. I also baked that acrylic paint on, and varnished both projects. I followed his instructional book, and I was really pleased with the finished project. They are sitting in my china cabinet..(actually, I did them a couple of years ago). I thought at first, the paintings might be too difficult..but they turned out great. I like this artist...although I understand not everyone might find his instruction wonderful. I find them to be detailed, and very well written myself. I am what I consider a beginner painter on canvas, and I really enjoy his books...a good step by step instruction in my opinion. These books are worth the money, as there are usually about 6 or 8 projects in each one. I was really surprised at what I'd accomplished with Jerry's art instruction. (If you want this particular book called Painting Light...it has the two swans at sunset by the lake, on the cover) (painting along with Jerry Yarnell.

I love Jerry Yarnell both as an artist and as an instructor. His paintings are beautiful and his instructions are clear. I started watching him on his Master Artist program on TV and record all the episodes. Great!

How some people can run this guy down beats me. I am from England the UK. I wish we had art teachers in the UK like Jerry Yarnell. I have been painting in watercolor for over 20 years, though never tried acrylic up until now. Jerry Yarnell is the best on the subject that I have found to date, He even gives his time in emails to help you that little bit more. Weather his talent is from god, or from who ever, Let Jerry be thankful for what he has, and for what he wants to teach people.
I now have 6 of his books, and each one has it's place on my shelf, to help me along my way with acrylics.
To me there is no better teacher out there. So, any one of his books will put you where you want to be. Go on. But one..!!
