I have a DSLR camera, and run multiple websites, so I am in need of a good photo editor. Because of some of the cool effects and overall functionality (especially the Nik effects, which come with the Ultimate edition), PaintShop Pro x4 has become my default graphics editor in recent months, with Serif PhotoPlus x5 in a close second. So, when I saw PaintShop X5 was available, I thought it sounded great. The problem is that it was very difficult for me to install, and there aren't that many improvements over X4. Let me first describe the long and difficult installation process.

When I went to install it, the disc hung at 28% and then stopped. This may be a problem with my DVD-ROM drive, but then again, I just installed another Corel product, and it worked fine. So, I decided to try to re-install. When I did that, I kept getting a screen that said my system had not been modified, and the installation closed. In other words, it assumed it was already installed, even though it wasn't, and I couldn't remove it from the Control Panel because it didn't appear there.

The problem is that it partially installed and put entries into the registry. I contacted Corel, and while I was waiting for their response, I found the answer. I had to manually uninstall the program, which involved making registry changes, which always makes me nervous. Search "manual uninstall PaintShop Pro X5" for the page on Corel's site that explains it. I got that done, and it was still hanging at 28%, so I transferred the contents of the disc to my wife's computer, and then to a folder on my hard drive. Then, it wouldn't install from that directory on my computer, because it was looking for files on a disc, even though I told it what directory the contents were in! So...I went back to the disc, and guess what?

I've been using Paint Shop Pro since version 7. When Corel first bought it from it's shareware creators, they began to dumb it down and it really lost a great deal of its following. Fortunately, they left most of the power under the hood and those features that had been dumbed out of the menus, were still accessible for power users.

I've since upgraded to PSPX and PSP 14, so I am very familiar with the program. Lets start with the inevitable comparison to photoshop. Paint Shop Pro can do, and has been able to do, 95%+ of what Photoshop as been able to do all along... Layers, yep had them forever, curves, yep... Color enhancement, easy one fixes and removing objects, they are all there. White balance correction, yep - in several places actually. It can read raw files from most major camera makers and will save to any format you can imagine. It can remove objects, repair old photos, make new photos look old, add frames, upload to Flickr, facebook, photobucket, etc... It really does it al.

Paint Shop Pro is powerful enough for anyone, even the snide, presumptuous photo editors that would have you believe that if your photo editing package didn't cost $500 then it isn't worth looking at... Pure elitist hogwash.

ANYTHING that you want to do with a photo can be done with this program.

So why isn't it more widely accepted?

Well, the industry likes a standard and photoshop was the standard back when PSP was still a $79 shareware program. So Photoshop became the standard. And once you learn the way a program works, you don't want to have to relearn the way another program works. Often it is as simple as which key combinations you have to press.

I have owned pretty much almost every name brand of Photo Editing Programs for over 13 years now. MicroSoft Digital Image Pro, Adobe PhotoShop, Serif Photo Plus, ArcSoft Photo Impression, Corel Photo And Video, Corel After Shot Pro and Corel Paintshop Pro being my favorites. For anyone wanting a great photo editing program that takes very little time in learning, I would recommend Microsoft Digital Image Pro or Corel PaintShop Pro Ultimate. Both can be learned with practice and very little reading.

I have PaintShop Pro X4 and can honestly say that the difference between Pro X4 and this New Pro X5 is fantastic for anyone who loves creating retro photos. My main use of photography is for family photos, restoration of old photos and making great looking photos for magazine articles I write for a collectibles magazine. PaintShop Pro Ultimate programs have truly great features for new, old or more professional looking photos.

PaintShop gives you the means to create stunning photos with the ability to organize, edit and enhance your photos. With their design tools, you can create unique effects or digital works of art. With High Dynamic Range, you can create great visual contrast which make for stunning black and white photos. PaintShop gives you a wide variety of filters, layers and brushes, giving you endless choices to get any effect you desire in your photos. There are text tools that are totally intuitive for both selection and editing. The makeover tools are really fantastic in removing blemishes, smoothing wrinkles, whitening bloodshot eyes or fixing red eyes, you can paint on a tan or remove extra pounds. For my photo restoration and repair, the scratch removal tool, sophisticated cloning and fade correction are invaluable.
