Editorial Reviews
"PAINTING OF A PANIC ATTACK" was recorded at Dessner's Brooklyn studio - where The National also recorded The National's "HIGH VIOLET" and "TROUBLE WILL FIND ME" - and at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY in the summer of 2015. Much of the album is indebted lyrically to Los Angeles, where frontman Scott Hutchison moved to from Scotland in 2014 Tracks such as "Get Out," the lead single which chronicles an addictive and obsessive love, and "Still Want To Be Here," telling of his struggle with adjusting to life in LA, perfectly encapsulate the mindset of the Frightened Rabbit frontman since the band's last release. And, of the album closer "Die Like A Rich Boy," Dessner says, "[It] feels like a completely classic song, but it's also a distillation of everything Scott has ever written about. It's so gracefully constructed and realized, and it's not trying to be anything other than what it is. I wish I could write a song like that".

No for my packaging review: Zero Starts! There is no download code for the vinyl and it is not available on AUTORIP. That is a travesty. So, I will have to shell out another $10-15 if I want to listen to it somewhere other than my turntable. Shame on you Warner/Atlantic. You still haven't figured out that the reason you guys are dinosaurs is because you keep trying to rip off your customers. I can't wait until the major labels are all bankrupt.
As with all previous offerings, don't expect sunshine and cheer, but that's not a bad thing. 6-7 tracks will instantly appeal to most listeners, and the rest grow on you very quickly with repeated plays. Looking forward to seeing these guys live and seeing where they go to from here. I was going to list the highlight tracks, but there really aren't any duds on this record.
Dig.

So what do I think of it? Well, I like it, but I'm not sure why. I listen to it in the car, which means I have other things to think about and I think this album needs more attention than I give it.
The lyrics are complex and tell some great stories, and the vocals are great, mainly cos they are so Scottish and who doesn't want to listen to Scottish vocals. They are ethereal and sometimes get drowned out by the music, but this is probably deliberate.
The music can be powerful at times, but also delicate, never more so in the title track Death Dream, where the beat ebbs and flows and the melody keeps the rhythm going, like a heartbeat.
Sorry for this meandering review. In summary I like the album and would recommend if you like well crafted lyrics.
P.S. Any suggestions for other albums by Frightened Rabbit I should take a look at?
