CONTENTS AND WEIGHT - 2 bars, 4 collars (2 for each bar), 52.5 lbs weights for each dumbbell broken down into 8 x 5 lbs, 2 x 2.5 lbs, 2 x 1.25 lbs. Note that these weights add up to 47.5 lbs, but the bar along with the collars adds up to the remaining 5 lbs. You may wish to keep this in mind when adding on weights. With fixed dumbbells, I usually curl 30 lbs each side, which means that with this set, I need to add only 25lbs weights because the bar makes up for the remaining 5 lbs to give a total of 30 lbs. I initially added full 30lbs weights and found it heavy, only to realize later that I had not factored in the weight of the bar and collars. The set also includes 6 spare rubber washers for the bars.
MATERIAL - The weights are made of cast iron with a black paint. They look built solid, and the paint has been holding up so far after several months of use. The weights did have a few chips here and there, but nothing of concern because you will only be using the bar to grip the weights. I know some reviewers mentioned a paint odor, this was not the case with the set I received. The bar and collars are made of standard chrome material with ridges in the middle for grip. If the ridges bother your skin, you can simply wear workout gloves when using these dumbbells.
OPERATION - It is fairly straight forward to add and remove weights from the bar. The collars are simple to screw on and remove for this purpose. The collars and the bar have a washer type rubber to cushion the weights on each end. Once rightly screwed on, the weights stay in place and don't move around.
MY MAIN ISSUE WITH THIS SET - While I mostly like this set, there is one big drawback for me personally and I thought I'd point it out in case this is of concern to others as well (I did not come across this point anywhere in previous reviews). Because these are adjustable weight dumbbells in increments of only 5lbs, the bar is longer than usual to fit more weights to add up to the full 52.5 lbs - it measures just a touch over 16 inches. If the increments had been in say 10 lbs, the bar could have been smaller. I compared this to a fixed weight dumbbell that I have, and that measures only 11 inches from one end to the other.
So why is the extra length a concern? It's a concern if you're doing bicep curls. As you bring your arm down during bicep curl reps, the long bar hits your thighs, and you can't bring your arm down in the fully extended position (unless you keep your hands slightly more spread apart than they need to be to fit the bar between your hands and thighs, but that's really not the proper way to do bicep curls - arms should ideally be close to the body). If you're doing pretty much any other exercise like shoulder press or triceps press, the length won't be an issue at all. In order to use these dumbbells, I now do hammer curls instead of bicep curls, which is a close alternative, though not exactly the same. But it works and I am ok with this change.
If you buy this set and are looking to do bicep curls, and the bar length is an issue, you have the option of ordering a smaller bar with collars separately (there are several available on Amazon that will fit this set and are 14" in length). Note that a smaller bar may not fit all the 52.5lbs weights, so I guess it depends how much you curl. For me, a smaller bar can easily fit 30 lbs on each side and works just fine without hitting my thighs in the arm-fully-extended position.
I am posting pictures explaining this issue. I hope you find this helpful in making your purchasing decision :)
As expected, the bars (for gripping) are a bit rough to use bare handed. (diamond ridging, which helps prevent slip) I recommend getting a good pair of weight gloves along with this. (I am pleased with the comfort, fit and design of Harbinger FlexFit Weight Lifting Gloves For Women)
The weights are very easy to change out, while providing a secure screw type fitting/tightening closure. If you want "pretty", these aren't the set for you. If you want a good adjustable dumbbell set within a good budget range, this set will do exactly what is necessary for the job. I highly recommend!
I love the adjustability and no need for having several different weighted dumbbell sets cluttering space....awesome!...exactly what I wanted. =)
