I was with the 388th TFW at Korat from April 68 through Mar 69. We were the sister base of Takli's. I worked at the Command Operations Center affectionately calls Apache Village. Both the Thud and Phantom crews did their pre and post mission briefings there. I saw them off as the crew vans picked them up to take out to their waiting birds and greeted them after their missions when they were brought back to check their equipment back in at the PE Shop and then debrief. These men were brave, scared, mad, glad, and extremely sad during their tours. This story by Gene Basel gives an insight into just what these men went through when they flew "Downtown" (Pak Six) which was over Hanoi. He alludes to the "criminally insane" rules of engagement that these warriors had to conform to or risk being court marshalled. The politics and top leaders in our government including both the then president and Secretary of Defense were directly responsible for the deaths of every individual American that was lost in Southeast Asia. You will read about the perilous missions and insane conditions these pilots were expected to carry their orders out in. I admire all of these brave crewmen both those who survived and those who gave their lives for our country needlessly! This book will both inform and remind readers of just one of the many experiences of aircrews who flew the incredible Thud and in particular the experiences of Captain Gene Basel, the author who was stationed at Takli RTAFB in Thailand in 1967-68.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author has you right there in the cockpit during those missions in Route Pak 6 and “downtown”. It was well written and gives the reader insight of the humor, pain, suffering and sadness that is part of war. I couldn’t put the book down, waiting to see what the next mission involved. His encounters with the enemy included shooting down a MIG, not an attack pilot’s specialty. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it was like to fly combat over North Vietnam.

GI does a great job of putting you right there in the Thud's cockpit the way it was at the time and place. He does not sugar coat it or make it worse than it was. You get the real view from his seat. I enjoyed the read. You will also.

For those readers who are interested in the prosecution of the air war against the North during Vietnam this airman's story is one not to miss. In fact, I rank this book right up there with the very best by guys that "talked the talk AND walked the walk". G.I. Basel's story traces his career as a fighter pilot from beginning to end with emphasis on the period he flew F-105 "Thuds" against the heaviest concentration of air defense systems ever devised by man to that point in time. GI's exploits are guaranteed to get your mouth to dry up and the hairs on your arm to stand up as he describes the tactics he and his squadron mates employed to carry out their missions. I wholehearted agree with those reviewers who have said they couldn't put the book down.

This is a must read for those interested in the Viet Nam War. The author Lt Col Basel, with editing by Patzi Gil and illustrator Lou Drendel bring you a first person account of what it was like to fly combat missions in support of the US mission in Viet Nam.

Can't wait for the movie, but this book is so well written that it creates a visual of what it was like to be in that pilots seat flying a Thunderchief on combat missions.

Again, this is must read for Vets, historians, and political leaders !

The author tells it like it was from his point of view. I couldn't find much to disagree. He enjoyed flying, but to pay the price he had to fly over North Vietnam and other places he wasn't wanted. This is an account of his experiences and the friends he lost. There isn't much "glory" in this book, because there isn't glory for those who fight, just living, dying or torture as a POW. That's not to imply there weren't some good times.

I couldn't put this book down and when I did all I could do is think about it . I read it in three days. This book is worth the investment. I promise you, you will be drawn into the cockpit, be part of the squadron as they relax and talk about the days mission. Thank you for your service!

Great to read about the very aircraft that I loved so dearly while stationed at Korat AFB in 68-69 with the 44th TAC Fighter Squadron. Very good book!
