The Paladin was enjoyable. We kinda knew where the story was going but the ride wasn't half bad.
Sam,our heroine, is determined, stubborn and willful. She disguises herself as a boy to join the prestigious service of the Paladin. She meets Tristan, in another life he was her betrothed. And Braendon half human half demon, who is struggling to atone for his past deeds. The story centers around their relationship with each other. Throughout the story we learn the very same organization whom they've pledged their duty and service to to protect humans sought the destruction of humans. It wasn't much of a surprise.
The story was simple, an easy read. The characters held your attention. But of course the ending was more like a cliffhanger of sorts.
All in all a good book, I would read book 2.
Genre: YA Sword and Sorcery adventure focused on a Heroine with two fabulous heroes/sidekicks. Includes a dose of romance.
Comments: The romantic scenes are as passionate as the sword clashing fights. The characters will tug at your heart strings for their strengths as well as their weaknesses. The quality of the writing may not be breathtaking, but it is solidly without flaw and compels the reader forward. While some of the story may be derivitive and even, at times, a little corny, the book is definitely enjoyable and will leave you wanting the author to write more books.
Plot (very minor spoilers): In order to train as a demon slaying Paladin, Sam must hide that she is a girl and certainly that she is the missing daughter of duke. She becomes the trainee of Paladin Lyons, the top swordsman, along with Braedan, a half demon who has many talents of his own, but faces much discrimination. The interpersonal relationship between the three is full of ups and downs in this intriguing tale as they become a powerful combination against demons.
I highly recommend this book to lovers of fantasy with a strong female lead, no angst, a bit of romance but no love triangles, and a story that leaves you looking forward to the next without leaving you hanging from a cliff.
I will most definitely be purchasing the next book - I am assuming there is one!!!!! - and adding Ms Slater to my shortlist of authors to follow.
I also appreciated that it didn't shamelessly leave us hanging on the cliff for a sequel, although there's plenty of room for one to be written.
For parents, there was only a little language, fairly mild, and no real sex scenes, though there was a little kissing.
