Approximately one-third of the book deals with the whys and benefits of the Paleo Diet, and how to get started. Chapter headings include: Creating a Paleo Lifestyle, Discovering Paleo Superfoods, Launching a 30-day Reset; Stocking your Cave Kitchen; Hunting for Paleo Foods. It's a good basic overview of the diet benefits; how to get started; and how to set yourself up for success.
The remaining sections of the book deal with recipes. Section Two includes simple soups, salads and snacks. Section Three is for Main Dishes, Sides and Desserts. Section Four includes specialty recipes designed for Slow Cookers, and a Kid Friendly section. Section Five deals with Tens, including ten favorite Paleo foods and ten essential kitchen tools.
Before this book I had envisioned the Paleo Diet as a grim thing with little variety. Now that I know there are Paleo versions of Curried Chicken Salad, Ranch Dressing, Chicken Wraps, and Deviled Eggs, I think I'm ready to give the diet a try.
Recommended for those interested in learning more about the Paleo Diet, or those just starting out. And, I believe even experienced Paleo dieters may learn some things from this book!
The recipes are solid to strong although I would have liked to have seen even more than the 135 that are in here. I guess that's what you get for this price! For the most part, the ones that I have tried are good and tasty and indeed you do not feel like you are starving yourself. Note that the Paleo diet will take a little bit of time and most of the food is fresh so a few more trips to the grocery store than maybe you are taking now-but the work is worth it. The Paleo Diet is the real deal and don't forget that you can modify it who you are. I'm sure they wouldn't like me saying that but I will bet if you start it or a variation of it that you will be impressed with the results.
I have tried several of the recipes and they have all turned out fine. One of my faves was a crockpot Easy Chicken Curry with Cabbage. For those that love coconut milk and curry, this is quick, easy and tasty. Chicken thighs, onion, cabbage, curry, coconut milk and peppers in a crockpot. Deelish. Meatball poppers with grass fed ground beef was good. Thai omelet is easy, banana almond pancakes, lemon cucumber noodles with cumin. The list could go on and on. Since receiving this book I have purchased Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle and Against All Grain: Delectable Paleo Recipes to Eat Well & Feel Great. I also think those books are great and of course there is a bit of overlap in the introduction where they talk about the Paleo way, but all the recipes are varied and each book has its own value, and in no way do I feel one book can replace another.
Now, with all that, adhering to the Paleo diet is not necessarily an easy thing. I had no idea at first that grains, ALL grains were a no no. No rice noodles, or even rice. No quinoa. That has been a bigger challenge, but livable. Actually makes cooking easier. With the Paleo diet, meat is not a bad thing, but it is strongly suggested not to just buy any meat. Grass fed, organic, lean $$$$ cuts are what is expected. That can get expensive and hard to find. I have also dabbled in Kimberly Snyders way of eating, which is similar in some respects, but she approves of grains to a point, especially quinoa and limits meat quite a bit. Plus there is the beans issue, doesn't work for paleo, can work in other diets. The Beauty Detox Foods: Discover the Top 50 Beauty Foods That Will Transform Your Body and Reveal a More Beautiful You is Kimberly Snyders latest and when I applied her 'rules', I quickly lost weight and wasn't hungry. I just couldn't handle the smoothies anymore and slipped a bit. So, good luck in your quest for good eating. I find a combination of Snyders theory and paleo seems to be working, and it makes sense.
