Product Description
BLACKWING: PENCILS WITH HERITAGE
The story of Blackwing pencils began in the 1930s, and since then, some of the world’s most legendary, award-winning artists have used them. Their cult following included John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones, who proudly used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and many other Looney Tunes characters. According to animation historian Charles Soloman, there’s even a Disney animator who was buried with his Blackwing. Blackwing pencils have a long heritage of providing not just a unique graphite pencil but an exceptional pencil experience for makers of all types.
DESIGNED AND CRAFTED WITH CARE
Blackwing pencils have become famous for their superior craftsmanship, iconic design, and the amazing works they’ve inspired. Our wooden pencils are specially crafted using the world’s finest materials, including Genuine Incense-cedar from the forests of California and Oregon and premium Japanese graphite. Blackwing has grown from a single pencil into a culture that empowers creativity in all of its forms. Blackwing graphite pencils are now available in three hardnesses: firm (perfect for writers and everyday users), balanced (a great tool for illustrators and artists) and soft (the ideal weight for musicians and woodworkers). More than just drawing pencils, Blackwing now makes journals, sharpeners, and carry accessories that make is easy to take your pencils with you on the go.

A QUALITY PRODUCT THAT GIVES BACK WITH EVERY PURCHASE
EVERY PURCHASE GIVES BACK TO K-12 STUDENTS.
We believe participation in a broad arts and music curriculum is central to both the academic and social development of our youth. Unfortunately, curricular arts studies are often among the first programs cut in our public schools, despite the strong positive correlation between arts and music engagement and elevated academic performance.
We donate a portion of every Blackwing purchase to the Blackwing Foundation, which funds and develops arts and music education at the K-12 level. When you buy a Blackwing pencil set, your purchase helps fund a child’s music education.
ICONIC REPLACEABLE RECTANGULAR ERASER.
Blackwing pencils are equipped with a unique rectangular drawing pencil eraser you can replace or extend to personalize and add precision to your artistry. Our replacement artist pencil erasers are available in different colors for a customized sketching experience.

I use both the Hi Uni and Blackwings for my drawings. I started drawing with the Blackings, and use the 602 as a 2B, Pearl - 3B and Blackwing - 4B. Later, I bought and used the Hi Uni's 2H, HB, 6B, and 10B. (I only recently became aware of the Palomino Mixed grade pencils, which I would like to try some time) If I must use only one pencil for a sketch or drawing then I would likely choose the 602. If I'm given a choice of 2 it would be the 602 and the Blackwing. Note: I find that the Pearl is very close in blackness to the 602 and I have a hard time discerning the difference.
In the attached image, I used all three Blackwings: 602, Pearl, and Blackwing.
I must give props to the seller, Palomino. When I received my shipment, there were 2 pencils where the eraser ferrell was glued to the eraser bracket making the removal of the eraser nearly impossible. They responded immediately to my concern and promptly sent me replacements + 2 more for good measure. Now that's great service and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Palomino.

All I can say is that mark making does seem to be a lot smoother than a yellow Ticonderoga No. 2... or for that matter, better than my graded artist pencils. I enjoy using this pencil as a sketching tool, as well as to lay down the construction lines prior to painting in watercolor. Sketched lightly, the lines seem to dissolve away and be relatively invisible after laying down a wash of color. With a little extra pressure, I can draw so that the lines show up with the painting if I choose. That's pretty good flexibility that I appreciate. As a working artist, I tend to be a bit of a "tool junky"... I'm always interested in finding something better than what I'm currently using. I'm also in constant search of a way to do more with less, to carry fewer tools, and to only have tools that are excellent. This simple (expensive) pencil is a constant companion with my sketchbook, water brush, and paint kit.

It’s a great sketching pencil and has the ability to draw lightly (like an H or HB) yet produce dark lines (like a 2B). It’s a real hybrid pencil, smooth to use and glides well over the paper. I use 170gsm Artway Studio Cartridge paper and it’s the perfect pencil. Another excellent feature is the rubber, which can be moved out as it wears and performs like a proper rubber, not like the rubber tips on those school HB pencils. It’s well shaped and a great asset to the pencil. It also stops it rolling off an uneven platform!
The pencils are quite long at 20cm compared to others (Derwent are 18) so make sure they’ll fit in your pencil case and I like the fact that they come in a robust box with a nice design. I think I’ll stick with this brand for the foreseeable future. I like it a lot and I think that even at over £2.25 per pencil it’s worth the expense. Give it a try.
