BLACKWING: PENCILS WITH HERITAGE
The story of Blackwing pencils began in the 1930s, and since then, some of the world’s most legendary, award-winning artists have used them. Their cult following included John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones, who proudly used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and many other Looney Tunes characters. According to animation historian Charles Soloman, there’s even a Disney animator who was buried with his Blackwing. Blackwing pencils have a long heritage of providing not just a unique graphite pencil but an exceptional pencil experience for makers of all types.
DESIGNED AND CRAFTED WITH CARE
Blackwing pencils have become famous for their superior craftsmanship, iconic design, and the amazing works they’ve inspired. Our wooden pencils are specially crafted using the world’s finest materials, including Genuine Incense-cedar from the forests of California and Oregon and premium Japanese graphite. Blackwing has grown from a single pencil into a culture that empowers creativity in all of its forms. Blackwing graphite pencils are now available in three hardnesses: firm (perfect for writers and everyday users), balanced (a great tool for illustrators and artists) and soft (the ideal weight for musicians and woodworkers). More than just drawing pencils, Blackwing now makes journals, sharpeners, and carry accessories that make is easy to take your pencils with you on the go.

A QUALITY PRODUCT THAT GIVES BACK WITH EVERY PURCHASE
EVERY PURCHASE GIVES BACK TO K-12 STUDENTS.
We believe participation in a broad arts and music curriculum is central to both the academic and social development of our youth. Unfortunately, curricular arts studies are often among the first programs cut in our public schools, despite the strong positive correlation between arts and music engagement and elevated academic performance.
We donate a portion of every Blackwing purchase to the Blackwing Foundation, which funds and develops arts and music education at the K-12 level. When you buy a Blackwing pencil set, your purchase helps fund a child’s music education.
ICONIC REPLACEABLE RECTANGULAR ERASER.
Blackwing pencils are equipped with a unique rectangular drawing pencil eraser you can replace or extend to personalize and add precision to your artistry. Our replacement artist pencil erasers are available in different colors for a customized sketching experience.

If that question seems somehow ludicrous to you, then don't buy these pencils. Get a nice gross of Dixon Ticonderogas and never worry about having to decide on what pencil to use again in your life. You'll thank me for that advice later. Ticonderogas are great pencils.
On the other hand, if you thought: "Yeah!" Then you should probably just go ahead and buy these Blackwings. You're probably the kind of person who takes tremendous care in your writing instruments for the return of that awesome "feel" of ultra-smooth graphite going on paper. The graphite on these things is so smooth you can hardly believe it. I'm not sure how they do it, but they are significantly darker than a typical HB pencil but maintain tip sharpness as long as a Ticonderoga. It's crazy.
The finish on the pencil is a fantastic matte black. The finish feels good in your hand.
The eraser (replaceable) is much nicer than most. It's very similar to a sanford white eraser. The only way it could be better is if it was more like a black pearl eraser, which IMHO is the best hard eraser available.
Yes, these pencils are expensive. But if you've made it this far in the review, you will find it worth the money. These pencils will last you a long time and you'll enjoy using them throughout that time.
I absolutely LOVE these pencils and the fact that the lead is so soft. I could never find a pencil perfect for my sketching needs until I came across this one. I continually pull these babies out for my drawing class when we do gesture drawings because they leave such a wonderful look after I'm done. Not to mention that they glide so easily over the paper without any gross parts in the lead to stop it.
I will say these are not perfect, however. The eraser is incredibly useless with this darker lead because it will never fully erase it. Not only that, but it's so dang small! I like that you can refill them, but by the time you actually might need to refill it, the pencil is half gone anyway if you use it consistently. The fact that it's a softer lead kills these pencils off quickly, so if you're finicky about your pencils going away too fast because perhaps they're expensive for you, then you should probably go for the 602s or Pearls instead.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love these pencils with a passion and they bring my work out so much better than any ordinary mechanical pencil, but yeah—they don't last long unfortunately...
I remember these pencils from when I was young, so when I found out they were available again, I splurged. I write almost exclusively with pencil, and I've tried every kind I can find. The Palomino Blackwing is a good pencil with smooth lead and a nice dark line.
The replaceable eraser is what I remember most about these from when I was young. It's still a great idea. Here's why: I normally use a Dixon Ticonderoga #2 for my daily writing needs, and I can tell you I have at least 100 pencils in a desk drawer that are still long enough to write with but the eraser has been used up. I can't bear to throw them out, so I bought a click-eraser (Pentel Clic Eraser Grip Retractable Eraser, Assorted Colors, 1 Pack of 3 (ZE21BP3-K6)) The Blackwing avoids that problem by having a replaceable eraser.
The other important feature of this pencil is it's smooth dark graphite, and this is where my problem with this pencil lies. It is no smoother than a Prismacolor Ebony Prismacolor Premier Ebony Graphite Sketching Pencil, Jet Black, Extra Smooth, Dozen - 14420, it is not as dark as the Ebony, and it costs more than 3 times as much.
Palomino is doing the same thing that Moleskine has done over the past decade. Market the mysterious and magical history of this famous pencil, and then throw in some marketing hype about the famous people who have used this pencil, and charge a premium to get people to think it's the best pencil ever. It's not.
Hopefully, I just saved you a little bit of money. Buy yourself a box of Ebonys and a click-eraser, and you're ready to write.
My one complaint about this recent order is that the pencils came with black erasers instead of the usual (and pictured) white erasers. I MUCH prefer the white eraser because it is better about leaving the paper clean when you use it. So, BOOO on the eraser mix up. (But I love my pencils, so you aren't getting them back.)
