I purchased this for a class. Daniel Albright addresses the fundamental question of comparative arts: Are there many different arts, or is there one art which takes different forms? He considers various artistic media, especially literature, music, and painting, to discover which aspects of each medium are unique and which can be “translated” from one to another. Very informative and easy to read.

Although the author is no longer living, the thing that really makes me sad about this book is the fact that posthumous publications are not generally allowed in national book award competitions. This book, which is to some of us the long-awaited culminating achievement of Dan Albright's more than four decades of interdisciplinary studies, deserves recognition.

A good idea hobbled by a suspicion of radical difference.
