Bring home high-definition TV without breaking the bank with the 26-inch Panasonic CT-26WX15 flat-screen CRT television. Simply connect an HDTV tuner or cable box and experience high definition broadcasts with amazing color and detail (it includes an NTSC, standard 181-channel tuner). It's compatible with both 1080i and 480p signals, and your DVDs will look incredible when played back from a progressive scan DVD player at 480p. Panasonic's Precision Picture Processing (P3) technology provides enhanced video processing by improving signal-to-noise ratio to reduce block noise, sharpness (and avoiding any halo effect), and contrast at high picture levels.
This 16:9 widescreen TV features a width-to-height ratio similar to movie theater screens, providing a theater-like experience at home. View HDTV broadcasts and widescreen DVDs the way they were meant to be seen. The video picture memory feature lets you select from three different default picture settings--Standard, Cinema, or Vivid--and save the best setting for each input individually. With the motion adaptive 3D Y/C digital comb filter (which separates the color signals to minimize dot crawl and blurred edges), you'll see sharp, focused images regardless of their source. Other features include 3:2 pulldown progressive cinema scan, which doubles the lines of resolution and motion compensation, digital velocity scan modulation, and a progressive scan doubler (for enhance picture from non-HD sources).
This TV features two built-in, 10-watt speakers and stereo output for connection to a home theater audio system. The Artificial Intelligence Sound feature controls the sound level to prevent wide variations in volume among different TV channels and types of programming. It features the following video and audio connections:
- Composite AV In (RCA): 4 (3 rear, 1 front)
- S-Video In: 2
- Component Video In: 2
- RF In: 1
- HDMI In: 1 The HDMI connection offers exceptional video and audio quality with a single quick-disconnect connector. It supports multi-channel digital audio transmissions and component video color spacing for true rendering of HD video. HDMI supports the HDCP copy protection standard, allowing transmission of copy-protected digital content to your display. The video portion of HDMI is also backwards-compatible with DVI-HDCP devices using a special cable adapter.

According to both Consumer Reports and me, this TV has probably the second-greatest CRT picture next to the apparently unbeatable Sonys. Sound quality is satisfying -- fuller and richer than any LCD TV in 2011 (and lag-free). While there's only one HDMI connection, it's got 2 component video inputs and 4 more old school ones for a grand total of 7 AV inputs (plus an output). As long as you don't mind the 85-pound weight (not that heavy), the boxy body (which is useful for stacking a receiver & speakers on top of), or its lack of 720p support (1080i only), this TV's only real drawback is that it's classified as "HD ready." That means if you get your TV for free over the air rather than through cable, getting an HD picture entails buying an expensive HD converter box, which are rarely sold anymore (most of the converters sold since the great analog-to-digital frenzy of 2009 have been low-definition). But hey, back in 2005 you couldn't really hold that omission against it.
Basically, I'd be giving this TV at least 4 stars except for one thing: like a lot Panasonic's stuff, it just drops dead after a couple years. Luckily, I found a discussion thread at AVSForum pointing to the common culprit: a single tiny fuse that has a tendency to blow up, thereby taking down the whole system. So if you find this TV not turning on one day, just pick up a 6.3A, 125V, 20mm slow-blow fuse somewhere on the Internet for 3 bucks, open up the back of the TV, look for the dead fuse on the circuit board that houses the power cord, replace it and BAM, you're back in business.
Yes it's an easy fix, but the average person wouldn't know that, so stars must be docked for Panasonic's low quality standards.
Black levels are nice on this set but the color is a little funky to me but I will probably find some good settings eventually. Seem to have to be tweaked quite a bit. All in all, its a good tv if you can get it for $300-$400 or less. I would not pay the $599 retail price for it. I think it would be worth that price if the HD tuner was included.
