From the manufacturer
Prepared to be dazzled by the crisp, high-resolution quality you'll see from now on with all your DVD movies. This versatile home entertainment player instantly scans, converts and plays back video formats that include DVD-ROM/R/RW/+R/+RW, plus CD(CD-DA)/CG-G/VCD/SVCD.
Transfer CDs to USB
Use the player's USB port to archive your favorite music CDs on USB memory devices. Simply connect a USB device to transfer music content onto the drive to enjoy MP3 music files anytime on portable audio players, laptops, desktop PCs and other devices.
Power Resume Convenience
Few things are more annoying than having the power go out in the middle of a DVD movie. But when power comes back, simply turn the TV and DVD-S500 back on and Panasonic's Power Resume automatically picks up where the movie left off.*
*Within approximately 10 seconds of the actual point when power was interrupted.
Up-converted DVDs deserve high-def audio to match. And for that, the DVD-S500 does not disappoint. Every DVD video is accompanied by Dolby Digital sound for maximum entertainment impact. You'll also experience the same level of audio quality while playing your music CDs.
The player's compact design is also dustproof. An advantage that lets you place the DVD-S500 on dust-prone shelves or in cabinets without worrying about any DVD/CD performance issues caused by dust buildup.
Show Off Your Photos
Turn your digital photo collections into fun, musical JPEG slideshows to show everyone on your big screen TV. Simply insert a photo CD, DVD or USB device, turn on the TV and enjoy.

It loads video disks quickly, is easy to control with the included remote, remembers where it was playing a DVD when turned off, and has been able to play any disks that I've loaded into it. I tested commercial movies, copies of commercial videos and DVD videos that I've created myself and they have all played just fine.
For someone with a high-definition, large-screen TV set there are better but more expensive choices such as the Sony BDP-S185 Blu-Ray Disc Player. However, for someone who wants an affordable, simple-to-use DVD player for a standard analog TV set, this player is well-priced, is reasonably compact and is easy to use. I'm definitely pleased with my purchase and believe, after shopping at several locations, that this player represents a good value for the money. I recently bought a 32" flat-screen LED HDTV, connected this player to its component video inputs, expecting little, and was delighted with the result.
***NOTE*** On the Web display for this DVD player under "Frequently Bought Together" an HDMI cable is erroneously recommended. This player does NOT have an HDMI connection.
And what of our 6-disc unit? It has become the back-up! The multiple disc feature is terrific for CD's, which is now what we use it for. The S48 does just fine for our movie nights from our extensive DVD library.
For what it is worth, our TV is a Panasonic which perhaps eliminates some of the negatives appearing in the reviews.
