The Panasonic RPHJE355K is the newest version in the "Panasonic SLIMZ" line, and it is absolutely the superior product.
Design: 8/10
Looks aren't that important when it comes to earbuds, but I still felt that last year's model looked a bit cheap. It had a huge colored bezel, no label for either side of the headphones, and the cord was a bit too long. They felt pretty comfortable in the ear, but even with the right sized earbud cover, I found that they were a bit loose in my ear.
Fast forward to this year's model--both sides of the headphones are clearly labeled, the bezel is smaller making the headphones look a bit nicer, and the earbud wiring is both slightly shorter (more manageable) AND slightly thicker (They should last longer). The headphones are so comfortable, that I don't even remember putting them into my ear after long periods of usage. (NOTE: last year's model didn't come with a clip, but this 2012 model does).
Sound: 8/10
I was pretty impressed that I was able to get the 2011 model so cheap last year. $20 for headphones with excellent sound? Well I'm happy to say that the 2012 version just sounds like a clearer version of last year's model. The sound is crisper and cleaner, even though both sets of headphones have the same basic specs. Panasonic claims that this year's model has "a highly-efficient Neodymium magnet which allows for a deep bass response and powerful, clear sound", and I believe it. I haven't even had a chance to break these in yet, and they are more clear with a bit more kick than last year's model(Tested both of them with one side of the headphones)!
There IS one issue with these set of earbuds though--sound leakage. I've found that if you listen to your MP3 player past 50% in a very quiet room, these headphones will leak enough sound that you will be able to make out nearly every word said in a song.
Even with that slight issue, I still believe that you are not going to find better headphones in the $15-$20 price range. These headphones will not blow you away like some of the $300+ dollar earbuds/over the ear headphones, but they are great for casual listening without having to break the bank. Make sure you have the right sized earbud cover on though--I initially thought these headphones were worse than last year's version until I changed the earbud covers out to the smallest size.
NOTE.... If you expect to get decent sound and bass response from this or virtually any other in-ear type earphone it is crucial that the tips fit tightly on the nozzle of the earphone and fit your ear canal tightly enough to create a good seal. Leakage at either place will produce poor overall sound and very little bass response. I know most people reading this already know how important fit and seal is so this is not aimed at you. I do feel that this is not emphasized enough. I believe poor fit and / or seal is often the problem when some reviewers mention weak bass and poor sound quality when reviewing earphones that do indeed have good sound and bass response.
The sound is great! the inner ear plugs are very effective at transmitting a great crisp sound without too much outside interference. I find that the bass performance on these is wonderful, and the highs don't roll off too badly. Apparently my right ear canal is a bit larger than my left, as the buds come mounted with medium inner ear plugs. The packaging does contain S and L sizes as well though, so a quick change left me feeling great.
I've been using them for a few days now, and have taken them out on my motorcycle, sitting around the house, and running. On the road it was no problem, fitting snugly into my helmet with no pinching. At home, of course there was no problem. Running, however, had the buds getting a little slippery, falling out of my right ear a few times. Granted, these are high-fidelity headphones, and not meant to be taken running, but I just thought I'd share the experience.
Anyways, wonderful earphones and would definitely recommend. Great sound for the price. My next set may be some wooden bodied ones, though!
