Top Customer Reviews
Let me first talk about the different components of the kit:
+5 gallon acryllic aquarium+ This is the tank itself. It's made of plastic, and therefore is very lightweight which for me was definitely a factor since I was going to be moving in a bit and I didn't want to haul a heavy tank to my new place. I have a long desk and the aquarium fits perfectly at the end of it. It's made of durable plastic, it's very clear and there are no leaks. It's see through all around, but the shape of the sides are a bit weird as they are curved and the light distortion is a bit wonky (as you can see in photos). The distortion effect isn't a deal breaker, but it is odd and has caused me to turn the tank at an angle so I can see it clearly from my desktop and my bed.
+Aquarium cover with LED lights+ The cover fits well on top of the aquarium. It does not actually snap on, which is a good thing because the whole lid can be swiveled open (there are hinges on the tank that the lid fits into) to get access to the tank for feeding for example. The cover also has areas in the back that can be cut out to accomodate more items such as a bigger filter. The cover has 18 LEDs built into it, 9 white, 9 blue arranged in two rows. They're controlled by a button on top of the cover and do have a transparent cover over them to protect from water and have a detachable power supply cord coming out from the top of the lid. The light have four settings: white lights on only, blue lights on only, both rows on and off. You push the button on the top to cycle through them and the order is a little weird. I would much more prefer having the white only setting first, then both lights for brightest setting, then blue only for kind of a night time lighting and then completely off. It's not s huge deal and the cycle order might make sense to some. While the lights are sufficient for seeing and maybe even showing off your pretty fish to others, the led strip is cheap. All of my light are working well so far, but if one of the lights broke, it seems like it would be a pain to replace LEDs as they're soldered in. The lights are also not that bright and don't provide sufficient lights for any plants that require even a moderate amount. Low level plants such as mosses and anubias will be fine and will slowly grow, bus as you can see in my photos, my glossostigmas and dwarf hairgrass aren't doing so well after a couple of weeks. They're survivaling, but definitely not thriving. Definitely keep that in mind before setting up your aquarium. There are plenty of different low light plants that look great. You may also opt to go for fake plants, but there are considerable benefits in going all natural.
+mini filter+ The kit comes with a small filter that clips onto the back of the aquarium. It comes with a single insert (replacements from another company can be easily found) and does a sufficient job in keeping the water clear and maintain some water flow inside the tank. It really is a puny filter and one of the 3 out holes got clogged (maybe by a floating piece of java moss, who knows) but that severely decreased the output flow from the filter. After that I bought an AquaClear 20, tore up the filter insert to stuff inside the new, vastly more superior filter, put the wimpy one away and never looked back. Other people have had a better luck with their baby filter, but do consider replacing it, it's definitely worth it.
Overall it's a cool little kit and after some adjustments I am very happy with it. It is small, however and definitely do consider the number and type of fish to get before you get the aquarium.
I'm glad I went with the smaller tank first, but there are challenges with a small tank so if its your very first aquarium, perhaps consider getting a 10 or 15 gallon.
Also read up on nitrogen cycle and aquarium care.
I definitely recommend this product.
There are couple of things I dislike about this aquarium. First, the aquarium I receive is slightly different from the picture. the aquarium pictured has an internal style filter. what I received requires you to cut a hole in the lid because the filter is now external. There are 2 issues with this. The hole has indentation in the cover so when you remove the piece from the cover you need to trim the edges or else it will be a big eye sore. The other issue is when you put the filter on the cover it does not fit level in the hole the filter just hangs tilted resting on the glass. This makes it look as thought the filter was not made for the tank. All together it makes the tank look ugly like you made it yourself. I really don't understand why the company could not have this piece removed in the factory and make the filter sit level.
The other issue I have is the l.e.d lighting. The instructions tell you not to leave the lights on for a long time because that will reduce the life of the l.e.d. This seemed odd too me because l.e.d bulbs have a longer lifespan than regular bulbs. After putting water in the aquarium I understood why. The water splashes up on the l.e.ds and although they have a cover over them the seal on that cover does not look 100% water proof, because condensation builds up on the inside cover.
So be warned you get what you pay for and nothing more. 1 tank with all in one filter, lid with l.e.d light( ligths have 2 mode, dark blue, light blue and off ). I gave it 4 stars because it the cheapest 5 Gal tank u will find. Great for kids or beginners.
I see other reviewer stating they received tanks with cracked glass but my tank came wrapped in bubble wrap inside a shipped box and was perfect.
