Hardy in zones 8-11, patio or indoors Proper name: Amaryllifoliu pandanus Prefers sun, keep evenly moist, not wet or dry Easy to grow Asian herb The starter plant you will receive is growing in a 4" pot Pandanus amaryllifolius is an Asian herb in the Pandanus (screwpine) genus, which is commonly known as pandan leaves and is used widely in Southeast Asian cooking as a flavoring. The characteristic aroma of pandan is caused by the aroma compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, which also gives white bread, jasmine rice and basmati rice (as well as bread flowers Vallaris glabra) their typical smell. The plant is rare in the wild, but is widely cultivated. It is an upright, green plant with fan-shaped sprays of long, narrow, blade-like leaves and woody aerial roots.

Pandan plants are evergreen, ornamental plants that can be grown successfully outside and with more limited success indoors. Outdoors, they can grow as high as 15 feet or more, while indoors, they tend to be more subdued.
- Planting the Pandan Plant
The pandan plant requires full sunshine, though it can tolerate shade in the afternoon. You don't need to do much to prepare the soil. Just break up the root ball when you transplant it from its original container, and water it thoroughly. Be careful when working with the plants, since the leaves contain sharp spines that are painful to grab. Add a little rooting hormone to help your pandan plants get started.
- Planting the Pandan in Pots
If you want to plant your pandan plants in pots, make sure the pot is deep enough for sufficient root growth and wide enough to provide at least 4 inches on all sides around the root ball. Fill the pot with potting soil designed for tropical plants, then settle in the root ball by watering it thoroughly.
- Water the Pandan Plants
Pandan plants require a fair amount of watering when they're first planted, but once they're settled, they're naturally hardy enough to survive near-drought conditions. Keep them well-watered during the summer to keep their leaves vibrant and healthy. During the winter, you can cut back on the water as the plant goes dormant. Pandan plants also require lots of sunshine. If you have limited access to sunshine, consider setting the pandan plants on plant stands that let you move the plants around easily to sit in the sunshine.
- Provide Humidity and Protection
Because pandan are tropical plants, they thrive in high humidity. If you plan to grow them inside, consider running a small humidifier from time to time to keep the air pleasant for the pandans. The plants are immune to many pests, making them easy to care for. Keep an eye out, however, for tiny webs or a dusting of a white residue on the plants, as these can be signs of an aphid or mealybug infestation. If you spot these tiny bugs, treat the pandan with aphid traps to restore the plant to full health.
To be FAIR about the size and the height of the plant, I think the price is right: You spend $7.99, then it'll take you more than 6 months for your plant to get to be like the plants that are in the picture; or you can to have the plants like those in the picture then it'll cost you way much more . Your call.
I ordered 2 pandan plants. After six weeks, one of my 2 pandan plants is very healthy and it's 3 inch tall now with the leaves get longer and larger double in size, I hope that I'll get many tiny plants that pop up from its roots from this plant in the future if it survives until it reaches its maturity. Last week, my other pandan plant which was 2 3/4 inch tall suddenly died. I've bought many kinds of tropical plant from other sellers and none of the plants that I bought has died on me like this one. I contacted the seller, he or she replaced my dead plant with a starting 2 1/2 inch tall plant within 2 days. I hope for the best that this replacement plant won't die on me. I'm very satisfied and happy to do the business with this seller. I've already recommended this seller to all my sisters and friends. I will definitely order other plants for my tropical plant collection from this seller in the future.
Other than the size of the plant, the rest of it is great. I placed the order, it shipped within a few hours, and I got it one day before the earliest estimated arrival date. The plant itself looks good and healthy and packaging was excellent. Masking tape was used to secure the soil inside the pot, and the entire box was filled with packing peanuts. There was even a small warmer inside the package, which was a nice touch. I've uploaded a couple of pictures.
It will be some time before the plant gets big enough to harvest though.
Pandan leaves should smell like vanilla (when bruised or crushed). As soon as I opened the box, a rush of vanilla came at me!! So you know that it's the real deal.
