Restored under the auspices of Martin Scorsese, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman stars Ava Gardner as the siren of a small Spanish town, the type of woman men kill and die for. She s never fallen for anyone until the arrival of the mysterious James Mason, the actual Flying Dutchman condemned to sail the seas until he finds a woman who would die for him. Featuring stunning color cinematography by Jack Cardiff (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes).
Watching this film is like entering a strange and wonderful dream.… I'm glad that the work we've done will allow new audiences to discover this unusual film. --Director Martin Scorsese

2 stars for the acting.
1 star for the timeline sequence.
1 star overall for the movie.
Excessive Narration in the movie. Two (2) narrators frequently explained the story during the movie. More Effective Script plus Longer Duration would have vastly improved the movie.
Not a fan of movies that first show the end of the story and then work backwards during the next 2 hours. Leaves nothing to the imagination.
Audrey Hepburn or Ingrid Bergman or Maureen O'Hara - along with - Gregory Peck or William Holden or Marlon Brando or would have greatly improved this movie.

Gardner was a good choice for the part. (Incidentally there is a short cut in this disc omitting a fine view of her bare ankles when Pandora appears on the boat.)
Mason, on the other hand, appears too prim and young for the part – perhaps a beard would have helped (it is not clear when or how he shaves!). His facial expression can fluctuate from what one might expect to something better suited to New York City nightlife.
The supporting cast is good, just a pity Marius Goring had to pop off so early.
Nigel Patrick, as always, gives a convincing performance and if I’d been Pandora I would have kept to the marriage bargain she had with the guy; except that, of course, that would be in defiance of the story’s intention, which, let’s be honest, is a typical example of the human species taking itself rather too seriously.
P.S. What was Geoffrey thinking of leaving his telescope out in the rain?
of the Flying Dutchman and Ava Gardner was such a beattiful star, she fell in love with james mason
as the Flying Dutchman and was ready to die for him so that he would be released from his punishment.
would recommend this film to all who like romantic stories. A real treat.
