We were given this "waffle maker" for Christmas by a family member. It is quite possibly the worst excuse for a waffle maker in the history of waffle makers.

Like others have mentioned, you don't get a waffle from this contraption. You get a pancake that looks like Darth Vader. If you're going to make waffle batter, which calls for more butter and eggs than pancake batter, you deserve to get an actual waffle. Otherwise, save your eggs and butter.

This device takes f o r e v e r to cook one single "waffle." I have three kids. They wanted waffles. I knew making only one waffle at a time would take longer than usual, but what are Saturday mornings for? It takes 20 minutes of cooking time to get a barely browned, barely cooked "waffle." After cooking one supbar waffle on this thing, I got out my traditional waffle iron. In the time it took to make the second Darth Vader "waffle," I made two batches (4 each) of delicious, crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, actual real waffles. By the time the second Darth Vader "waffle" was finished, my kids were full of real waffles and not interested in poor Darth Vader. He'll probably get fed to the chickens.

The only good thing I can say about this waffle maker is that it's easy to clean and takes up less storage space than my real waffle maker.

If you live alone, are extremely patient, love Star Wars, like to waste eggs and butter, and don't actually want to eat a waffle, you may like this thing.

OK. The bad first. Waffles, as the great Alton Brown pointed out on his waffle episode, have more outside than inside due to the shape of the waffle iron. To get the texture of a waffle, you've got to have divots and studs. This device doesn't have that. In fact, the surface is almost smooth with a few lines and creases to make the shape of Vader's mask.

The resulting food product, then, simply isn't a waffle. It's more like a muffin top. Or a waffle/pancake hybrid. Or just a thin cake. It is kind of hard to describe because it just doesn't fit any existing category. It comes out with a thin layer of slightly crispy crust (almost like an unglazed donut) and a 3/4 inch think fluffy, cake-like interior.

I see other reviewers who give this device low marks. I understand why. If you really crave a classic waffle, this thing won't make one.

But if you are open-minded and want to try something just a bit different- and if you enjoy eating things shaped like the head of a Sith Lord, give it a go. I highly recommend using recipes that call for butter and eggs to give you lift and fat for the surface texture, avoid over-mixing to prevent developing a tough, bready interior, and keep the plates well-greased with butter or spray between waffles.

Also, the crust of these Vader-cakes benefit significantly from a 10-minute rest on the rack of a 200 degree oven. This allows you to cook up the whole batch before serving, so two birds with one stone.

Tried many waffle recipes- it only leaves you with a limp pancake. If that's your thing, as long as it look like darth Vader, then this is for you.

This waffle maker was a great funny gift I got for my husband for Christmas, because he loves Star Wars and was looking forward to seeing the new
movie. He immediately used it and loved it.
I'm taking one star off, because it doesn't look 100% like Darth Vader, but it still does well enough to where you can tell its him.
All in all, we are really satisfied with this product.

Very fun! Gave it to my boyfriend as an x-mas gift. As a gift, it's great. Especially for a Star Wars fan. But I do have to say that it makes more of a pancake than a waffle. I know that splitting hairs because it’s all really the same batter, but I was a bit surprised and let down of the thickness of the “waffle”. With that said, the pattern did come out after the second one. The first one always seems to be the sacrificial lamb to the pancake/waffle gods. All in all, it was a fun gift to give. The quality is a little dinky. The indicator light for when the waffle should be ready is not true to when the waffle is actually ready, which is several minutes after the light goes on. Still a cool maker, just not perfect.

Makes a great Darth Vader face yet the waffle takes forever to cook, the lid has a hard time staying closed, and the waffle has to be so thick to work in the iron that it is more cake than waffle. Used it twice now and going to return. Our cheaper waffle iron works much better.
