(LP + CD) Originally released in 1969, this album is one of the most significant in Brazilian musical history, spearheading the musical Tropicalia revolution lead by Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, not to mention Gal Costa and mutant rockers Os Mutantes. Not only were the artists experimenting with the music, they were also making a very strong political statement that spoke out very harshly against the military regime in Brazil at the time. This album helped land Veloso and Gil a brief stint in jail and eventually in political exile in the UK. Includes bonus CD of the album.

I wonder how many see a connection between the album cover of Tropicalia and Sergeant Pepper? Despite the Brazilian green and the British red and yellow, the album artist must have been thinking about how Brazilian and British music were borrowing from each other.
A brief caveat. I am not Brazilian and don't speak Portuguese, but I do love MPB...all of it. Yet I don't feel adequately prepared to write about the music on the disk itself. Thus I write about the background of the music.
I can hardly believe that more knowledgeable people have not reviewed this and other significant Brazilian recordings.
Really interesting stuff, nevertheless, and worth a listen. The problem with seminal records that are over 40 years old is you hear echoes of other things as you listen (when sometimes those things come after this...); in a way I wish I had heard this 25 years ago, when it would have seemed even more fresh, and - I expect - quite remarkable.
