Panzer Battles: A Study of the Employment of Armor in the Second World War Hardcover – January 3, 2006
Enhance your purchase
Armored warfare assumed vital importance in World War II, and during the first years of the war despite inferiority in numbers and equipment, the German Army was master. The secret of Germany's early successes and the reason for its eventual failure are disclosed in this analysis by a brilliant former general of the German Army. Major General von Mellenthin, who saw action in every theater of the European war from 1939 to 1945, follows the panzer armies through Poland, France, the Balkans, across the deserts of North Africa and the frozen wastes of Russia, to the final defeat on the Western front. It was the decisive victories of the German panzer divisions in North Africa that taught the Allies the importance of an integrated combat team consisting of tanks, infantry and artillery. Panzer Battles provides an especially vivid account of the legendary desert battles fought by Rommel. The continued timeliness of Mellenthin's work was brought home in the First Gulf War by General Norman Schwarzkopf, who kept the book on his desk throughout the conflict. Panzer Battles is a candid and forthright discussion of the War that reflects not only von Mellenthin's intimate knowledge of the workings of the German General Staff, but a thorough familiarity with the Allies' strategic aims. It is a work that has taken its place among those of Liddell Hart, J.F.C. Fuller and Chester Wilmot as essential reading for anyone interested in the military aspects of the war in Europe.

Vast in scope, keen in its technical appraisal, respectful of history...other military authors should doff their hats and bow. --Brigadier general S.L.A. Marshall, chief historian of the European theater in World War II

Great account of various panzer battles that is a standard in any library. Deals with obscure battles and the problems that need to be looked at but are most often ignored by historians. A must have.

Having worn out two paperback copies of this classic, I bought a hardback. I suspect that I will eventually wear this one out too. This book is THE STANDARD by which all other accounts of WWII armored combat should be measured. Scholarly. Readable.

Obviously written from a German point-of-view about 10 years after the war, the author added too many personal opinions and seemed to downgrade the Russians. If that is stated, that's OK, but the Russians won. They did something right!

If you like WWII history as told from the German side, this is as good an example as any. But a lot of these WWII German General's Speak type books blend into one for me.

Interesting and informative look at the creation of the German Army and the German view of the North African War.

A fascinating review of German army strategy at the Corps level and specifically with armored warfare. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in WW2, from the hobbyist historian to military officers.

From pure militarily point of view, the book content is increditably attractive with many insights contained. One can understand the reason why German army could still fight so well throughtout the war even though they were extremely outnumbered everywehere. The only little pitfall is the relatively old packing of the book. I believe this book has been placed on shelf for a long long time.
